WOW... Fast colonization over night pics...
    #3787336 - 02/16/05 02:24 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Yesterday

Today

Should be ready to go in a couple days.  This is my first attempt at rye so from the horror stories I keep reading about rye, I'm feelin good   My temps are slightly low (76-79) but not horrific, but I'm sure they would colonize quicker with better temps (today is day 10).  Anyway, if you click on the pic from today, you'll see a wetspot on the bottom of the third jar from the left.  This wetspot has been there since I pulled them out of the PC.  Its basically a collection of grains that have burst and basically suctioned to the glass.  I wasn't able to break them free upon initial shaking right out of the PC, nor when shaking grains when they were partially colonized.  Any suggestions?  I'm thinking that if this small section won't colonize, then I'll just take it out when I case them.  Any suggestions or critisism welcome and thanx in advance :stoned:

your pics look good
as for temp , try placing them up high the temp in the top of a room verse on the floor can very a bunch place thermometer up and see for you self, you would be better off around 84~86 but not over.

next time try to have the jars only 75% full makes it much easy er to shake.
all so i dont use wide mouth and dont recomend them for grain
what i have done is i bought some of thoes filter disk for teh jars and cut them in to 3/4 pieces and with the jars still in teh box used a screw driver to pop a nice 1/4 holl in the top , to seal it i use the red hight temp rtv silcone gasket maker you get it in a tube at any car part store 1 tube will do 100 jars and it cost about 4 bucks just get it around the hole and thenarouns the sides of teh filter patch i wil try to post a pic tomarrow

i don't know how you make up your rye but let me tell you how i do it
i have a big pot i use for beer brewing with a thick metal bottom to spread the heat out and keep things from burning thy are costly but worth it if you have a cheap this bottom you will have to watch the heat more close and stir more .  i make it like you would cook rice. i put 1 cup of rye in the pot for each quart jar i am doing and then fill with water till the rye is just barley covered and simmer for an hr or till all but the the smallest amount of water is left, after stirring up real good that last bit will get mixed in, then i use a 16oz plastic cup to fill the jars the same kind you would get at a keg, it works out great no wast and not to full then presser cook for an hr .
also when i cook the rye i add some stuff the i have found make a great diff in spawn speed and heath

i add 1 600 mg Calcium pill per 2 jars(used this one night because i was out of plan calcium carbonate) calcium is very important to the metabolic functions of mushrooms the type i use is a generic Caltrate it had vitamin D too. bottle has 500 ,600mg tablets for like 8 bucks

i add 1 multivitamin for every 7 jars i do batches of 27
the vita i use is the equate ver of centrum it has lycopene

i add 1 teaspoon of twin labs nutritional yeast for each 7 jars
this yeas has like every amino acid and B vitamins it also has
tryptophan witch has been proven to increase magic levels
this stuff really make a big diff
i use the yeast from my home brew when i have it works just as good

lastly i add 1 stick of white black board chalk for each 7 jars
black board chalk is not "chalk"calcium carbonate but rather is
Calcium sulfate or gypsum aka sheet-rock  gypsum is a pH buffer and
anti clumping agent its add to clay soil to break it up, it makes shaking jars easlyer adds Calcium and sulfur witch mushrooms need both

i have a mortar and pestle i use to grind all the stuff up in to a fine powder and stir it in just after the water gets added

as for the D in the calcium and the licopen in the muti vita
i only told you that because the most pop brand have it  and write it in big letter on teh bottle it does not hurt growth vers pills with out it.i don't know if thy help but it works great for me
my grain to grain transfers take about 7 days to fully colonize at 84 degrees using EQ stran

sorry for the mis spells if you need clarification just ask i will fix

I had a problem with co-op grain. all sorts of extra crap in it. contact a bulk health food store. you can get it brought in for around 10 for a 10 kg bag. Don't worry about the wet stuff at the bottom. just don't dump it into your trays or mix it in with the straw if your doing that. I opted to go right for the grain to straw learning curve. Had the same problem with clumping wet stuff. But everything turned out all right.

Those bursted grains will have no effect you want to try to avoid that by placing a washcloth around outside of jars in PC to avoid direct heat from metal, bursted grains are hard to colonize and stick together.

you get popped grains also if you add dry grain and water strait in to the jar before pressure cooking expessaly if you have a little to much water and the gains swell till thy pop.
i use co-op grain and have had no problems the type i get has a contents analysis of 99% rye grain all the rest being dust weed seeds stems etc its very clean and cheep 10 bucks a 50lbs sack where i am
at that price even if you had to clean it a bit you are still saving a bundle

Um, No.
Gypsum is NOT a Ph buffer.

And a big bag of garden gypsum would probably be a better source as it would be cheaper in the long run, and there is no way to know what other additives are used in the making of "blackboard" chalk. At the very least, the bag of gypsum would cut down on the mortar and pestle use...
