Why is it that...
    #3786483 - 02/16/05 12:18 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Here a question for the expirience myc-heads out there,

Why is it that (certain) mushrooms are seasonal? I live in the SF bay area and it's been raining like crazy here for the last few days and I was thinking to myself, "what are the spores doing on the off season? Are they hibernating!? or what?" There's gotta be at least a few O.G.'s in this forum who know the answer. Thanks!

For the same reasons that plants are seasonal. They have adapted so that they fruit at the time when their spores are best able to spread and grow.

Spores are everywhere. Every breath you take has spores in it, typically on the order of about 100. My guess would be that most saprophytic fungi survive hard times in spore form.

A lot of the fungi survive winter underground. The thallus is well protected by the soil. In particular, the mycorrhizal fungi survive dry and cold spells this way.

Happy mushrooming!
