ADHESIVE FILTER PATCH (cheap)
    #3785799 - 02/15/05 08:40 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Old agar has screwed with micro-biological filters forever.

Old agar has tested filter material - after filter material.

Old agar has tested about every kind of adhesive on the market.

WELL FINALLY:

0.02 micron waterproof adhesive filter patch that adheres to metal, plastic & autoclave bags through repeated steam sterilization cycles, as well as microwave cycles.

Will come in differing sizes, shapes, thickness & porosity for differing applications. Will be manufactured in 4 inch wide rolls (user cuts to size), and 8.5 X 11 peal off type sheets.

The best thing besides functionality, is they will be cheap.

I mean CHEAP.

Don?t ask. I?m not sure how cheap, as working out mass production costs now. Discussing a deal with a vendor. Since I don?t have the inclination to become one.

It going to take a couple weeks to have the mass production done. So for now, all I have is the prototype stuff.

Once I have a truckload, I will either have a contest, or simple give-away..... to a bunch of folks can give them a whirl - for FREE.

question, how strong is the adhesive??? will these hold up with grain jars while shaking with a single hole 3/8-1/2" or would several smaller holes be required???

Does the grain jar above answer your question. That one of the patches covering two (2) 1/4 inch holes. Biggest I tried was one (1) inch & it worked fine.

Fuck the bandaids! hehe  My question is why would these be superior to micropore tape? They seem like the same stuff more or less I mean micropore tape works awesome for me. Also there is absolutely no reason to have a hole in the lid larger than 3/8in. you guys. I always like to take things that extra step agar I'm not trying to shoot down your idea at all, I just need some answers! Thanks

The tape is designed for temporary use on human skin, not repeated use in pressure cookers. The tapes porosity is degraded dramaticly by heat, as is the adhesive & neither are designed for perminant use, nor sterilization other than by radiation.

These are in fact 0.02 micron & will remaim so. They are three (3) times as thick, have four (4) times as much adhesive & are perminent. Simple peel & stick. Moreover, they are about the same cost as tape.

It may also come to be that plastic wide mouth lids with this filter on it will be offered. One stop deal, no more tape or Tyvek to fool with.

There is a bit more on the horizon, besides these patches. Tests are being done on a very inexpensive new type substrate (as effective B/E as compost, or dung straw mix), microwavable in a container with this type filter installed on the lid.

No more PF glass jars. No more steaming jars - either. Nuke it, allow it to cool, them incubate. All in one very lightweight - follow the directions (idiot proof) inexpensive package.

Add predetermined amount of water to substrate, mix, fill plastic containers to line, add lid, nuke preset time, remove & allow to cool to room temp. Innoc per direction, incubate, fruit in in stand alone Mini container (provided - additional, or not), or in your own TIT.

Bulk substrate type cakes (can also be grated for spawn), no steaming, or PC'ing involved. How easy is that for a newbie.

so does the paper micro pore tape stick better than the silk type?

I would hope so (got a box of it) and the silk type hasn't worked out very well, it doesn't want to stick after sterilization too well.

Agar -

Does this mean that you now advocate the use of micropore tape, or simply that the advantages of your product did not outweigh the cost difference between the two?

Thanks,

3M Micropore tape.
It is all over ebay.
The 1 inch wide stuff comes in boxes of 12 rolls.
(30 ft per roll)

Quart wbs jars, all with lid holes covered with it & coffee filter dust covers.
PC time was 90+ minutes at about 18 psi.
Lids were 1/2 turn loose & tightened when taken out of PC, then shaken.

AA PC's with the sterilizer type toggle pressure release valve

use very little water.

My 941 calls for 2 pints & after PC'ing 6 hours.
Just a tiny bit less than 2 pints remain.

I have never used foil over a lid. No need to.

I gather with weight regulated type PC's. You have to have a LOT of water in one, to UP your PC times to 2 or 3 hours. So, I guess foil is needed. Otherwise, water might get/splashed in the jars.

NO.

That looks like Duropore tape.

Micropore is a White PAPER tape.

At least that is how it is described.
I believe it is paper, made of spun polyester (polyfil).

Do you always incubate jars sideways like that? I liked to keep mine at a 45 degree angle, like Stamets suggests.

Can I swap out my weight for a "toggle pressure release valve"? Or is this something the PC needs to come with. I've got an AA925 with a weight. That pressure release valve looks like it would come in handy.

Uhhhhhhhh. I don't think it would be a big deal either way. Upright, sideways, 45 degrees, backupwards :smirk:

Apparently Stamets believe that vertical, horizontal and 45 degree angles all make different qualities of spawn, otherwise why would he suggest the 45 over vertical?

When I used to accidentally get too much moisture in the jar, and the very bottom had a hard time colonizing after the rest of the grain was 100% id put it sideways and that helped the bottom colonize.

Lay those jars down however you want Psychoslut. We'll still love you. I've always kept them standing upright and had no problems, but I'm no Stamets.

is this the stuff?

silicone adhesive, made out of spun polyester.

I know, not white but does meet the specs you have so far given.

If it's used in Powder Coating, Spray Coating, and Plating, as the website indicates, it may not be very porous. The biggest question I think is will that tape allow for gas exchange?

Reason top layer of jars is horizontal is.............

That is a standard locking type metal 4 drawer 3 foot deep filing cabinet.

Can fit about 28 jars per drawer.

Once jars are 98 to 100% colonized, I remove them from the incubator & store them in filing cabinets, in the garage, where winter temps are mid 40 - 50F.

That stalls them until I get around to using them.
I store colonized spawn bags - the same way.

Here is where Glad ClingWrap works awesome as parafilm it is gas permeable unlike most all other clingwraps. Just cut a roll into 1" sections.

Nice find, but Jaeger is right, $1.14 a patch hardly seems worth it. There has got to be someone else out there who has a link to something similar made in the US.

Great link, seriously. Now all I have to do is get a degree in biology and my masters in engineering so I know the correct micron pore size to order.  What a pain in the ass.

Agar's design used a pore size of .2 mics. My link went directly to the polyester page, which is prob what you would need. You can get a hundred of these for like $50. Less than 1/2 the price of capnstemz.

I love this site, post one thing and someone eventually finds something better!

Thanks for the link premendman.

I agree on the price completely...too much $$$$

By the way, those filters dont seem to have an adhesive on them, probably decreasing the cost.

I an familiar with that patch, as well as about every other made.
(side note - orchid propagation is another hobby of mine)

Trouble is their cost.

Same thing goes for those in the link a few posts down.

This is a picture of about $150 worth of different types 3 micron filter material. You can get very significant price breaks, buying it in MUCH larger amounts. But, this stuff is still very expensive, no matter how you buy it.

Any of these will autoclave & function perfectly as a filter for this purpose.

The next issue is that an adhesive that will also withstand autoclaveing must be applied to the material.

Which is no simple feat, as it must be applied as a very fine mist. Otherwise, it will degrade the porosity of the filter material.

Then you have another issue.
If the adhesive is applied to the area that is exposed to grain spawn, or substrate & the jar/bag is shaken - to speed colonization.

Grain spawn or substrate can/will often adhere to the exposed adhesive. Which can degrade filtration & cause contamination by a wicking effect.

That aspect can be overcome by applying another small piece of filtration material upside down to the center of the downward facing patch.

OKAY.....bingo ....bango.... I made a 20 by hand.

Then.....tested them repeatedly, to insure functionality.

Hey, guess what? They worked perfectly.

Gee..... you think you could put them together at about $0.03 cents each total cost. Some quick number crunching & you figure you could sell rolls of 100 for $7, plus S/H. S/H would be about $3 in the continental USA.

So, in the customers hands, the cost would be $10 per hundred.

Which is a fair price & would give you a healthy profit margin.

Next step is MASS PRODUCTION.

Right there is the hang/up. :mad2: :crazy2:

Equipment would run about $80K (usd).

Then there is the space required, as well as all else involved in a start up small scale manufacturing enterprise.

Then, you do a few calculations on investment return, given the very narrow specific market arena the product would sell in.

SURPRISE SURPISE.......

Lets just give it a best guess, if you sold $10,000 worth a year.

Figuring $5000 of that is hard costs.

Now YOU do the numbers on your investment return.

That is just the investment return.

How long would it be - before you ACTUALLY ...MAKE A PROFIT.

To long. :mad2:

Just got an email back from the guy from the link I posted.
He told me that I can get the smaller flask filters for 35 US dollars. I still dont know about shipping. It sounded in his reply that shipping was included in that price. Made of the same material, has adhesive backing, just smaller than the discs, enough to cover a 3/8 hole.
