Talking to Bums...
    #3784541 - 02/15/05 06:52 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Have you ever talked to a bum? had a serious in depth conversation with one? I have found that every single one is highly spiritual, even though most are christians, or forced to be that way after months of religion for food programs by government subsidized "missions". Anyone have any good Bum stories? So far I have conversed with about 50 bums in Nashville, New Orleans, and clearwater, and I have found a few of them have some really great things to say.

I was in N.O. once walking down the street, when a guy dressed in full gothic armor sitting on the curb picked me out of the crowd of people and stared at me. As I walked past, he said "There are no spoons" very seriously and with so much intent. This was also a few years before the matrix came out. So i asked him what he meant and he said that the spoon was a delusion of self. That isnt really insightful, but a kind of funny bum story.

on the campus of the University of Victoria there lives this old dude named Peter, apparently he used to be on the Faculty of the University but he was kicked out for being too wacky or something, and maybe that made him sorta snap a bit (or at least bend), because now he is a self-imposed homeless man, he gets all his food from the wasteful students' leavings, same with his clothes, and collects shitloads of random stuff which he wheels around in shopping carts and stashes various places. he bequeathed a shitload of random old records on me one time. oh yeah, and he is SO crazily well-spoken and well-informed, he talks circles around me and around anyone I've overheard conversing with him.

a university campus is a pretty smart place at which to be homeless. Peter sleeps in some of the rooms that are open all night sometimes, also at UVic there's a sweet forested area with a creek, he sleeps in there (I slept in there a few times too). The campus security gives him some flack but most of them are pretty good about it.

one homeless guy I once conversd with gave me the following truths:

1) women will fuck with your mind---be careful.

2) marijuana will fuck with your mind---be careful.

3) alcohol will also fuck with your mind---however it's safer than marijuana.

4) make sure to paint pictures all over your guitar, so that if it gets stolen, you'll be able to identify it easily.

People living on the street are great resources. I've learned a great deal about people from my conversations with street people. Most can be great conversationalists with a wide range of vocab. and experiences. I recently met a guy who works on and collects old bikes that people are throwing away, he had some nice bikes he'd fixed up and it was neat talking with him. Some bums are just assholes, but then again so are many non-bums. http://www.fotolog.net/mashuga/

I was homeless for some time in my youth.

Bum is a horrible word btw.Bum implies a lazy person who doesnt want to work.Thats hardly the case.In my case I became homeless because my stepfather ran out on us.Rent was due the next day and he took all the money and out we went into the street not too long after rent was due.It took us a few months to get back on our feet and get a new place. We would walk around getting handouts during the day from various people and places and at night we slept in an empty house that was on the edge of the city.(Houses in the city would work as the main middle parts of the city are patrolled regularly every night by police.Police here are unkind to the homeless to say the least. We did well even though it was november when we got kicked out of our house and it was quite cold out (since I live in the north). We ate well enough and stayed warm.I learned alot from the experience and grew a lot as a person those few months. Before that I had never known what it was like to be truly poor. Before that I was always very upper middle class and lived in the rich part of town.We always had at least 3 cars and lived in very large houses. We always had the best things. For a long time after that experience we ended up being very poor.Sometimes to the point of only being able to afford one meal a day for a long time.

Now Im very comfortable again though after a lot of hard work and time.Me and my fiance are getting married this fall and we are buying a house this summer. We own a nice car and we do very well.

As far as experiences with other homeless people, having been where they are I sympathize with them and I've helped many of them out.One old homeless man used to come around our neighborhood looking for cans to earn money so I'd bag up a bunch of cans (usually around 2 bags full by the time he came around again) and Id give them to him.I had offered him money before that but he declined saying he needed to earn the money himself.

Other homeless people I ask them what I can do to help or ask them what they need and I try my best to help them get what they need.

A couple of times I have even let homeless people and families stay with me for months until they can get back on their feet. All I asked is that they respect my belongings and clean up any messes they make.

Although a few times I had thing stolen and other times people have been quite rude and took advantage of my hospitality.

But I always have faith in the human spirit.

When I lived in Hawaii (in the Army) I spent a lot of nights in Honolulu talking to homeless people while waiting for the bus to start running again in the morning. Many were well above average intelligence people who merely suffered from substance abuse problems. They often had an interesting perspective on things. The truths you quoted certainly have validity...especially that last one.

I once talked to a bum who was saying how great the local city college was. I guess that's why he's a bum.

Fairly recently I met a homeless woman (it was sometime in december and pretty cold as I live in BC, Canada).... she was sitting on a cement barrier with some cardboard boxes around her.... I was in a hurry so I didn't talk long.... but I gave her my 6-inch subway sandwhich and she told me a bit about living on the streets....

Awhile ago me and a couple of my friends were hanging out with this local homeless guy named Penrose.... we were all sitting and smoking some herb in this little park right next to the Head Shop in our town... and Penrose just opened a bag with tons of weed in it and a smaller bag of mushrooms.... and just started passing them around.... at one point he was like "Wow.... I bet tomorrow I will wake up and wonder 'Where the fuck did all my drugs go!?'...."...fortunately we are respectful people so we didn't rip him off.... but it was pretty nice of him for sure

I normally remind the homeless that God loves them very much.

Many ask for spare change, sometimes I'll give them some if they give off a good aura. Some beggers give off a bad vibe which generally means they're drug addicts. Once in awhile I'll take a homeless person out for a McDeal Meal at McDonald's if they're up for it. Most of them, drug addicts or not, won't turn down free food. I'm not racist, but I absolutely refuse to give out change to homeless native people in my city because if an aborginal is homeless, it generally means they're an addict/alcoholic because the government has programs up the yin yang for aborginals to keep them away from street life - they get government funded post-secondary education, etc.

I use to hang around with a friend who had an obsession with bums. He was a very strange guy, none-the-less to say, he'd also associate with homeless people in a neferious way. He'd pick fights with them, he'd smash their temporary homes in the wilderness and have rituals of lighting his child toys on fire inside these kind of homes. we'd joke about homeless people as we'd also joke about other stupid shit; then came the time when me and my other friends back in the schooldays would come around and ditch that faggot motherfucker.

and that is the end of one of my gay friends.

In Victoria, the weather is so fair all year round, that people can live on the streets with realitive comfort (as much comfornt as the street gives...). Because of that, there's a lot of people on em. One shitty thing is how they haggle you. They will actually follow you around, pestering you til you either give em somthing, totally ignore em, which is kinda difficult, or you flip out at em, to which they then flip out at you, but finally leave you alone.

One really good thing I found with em (though I sure there's more than one) is directions. Most people that are living on the street, will give you pretty decent directions to where your headed, minding that you drop em a coin or two.
