Is this fishtank heater ok?
    #3783819 - 02/15/05 02:16 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

My question is regarding the "top" of the unit...where the AC cord is attatched. The box says it is "moisture proof" but would it be ok to submerge the entire thing in a TiT setup? or am i going to electricute myself?
sorry about the low quality pics

Mosture proof does not mean it's fully submersible.

also the lady at petsmart told me topfin is about the worst piece of crap you can buy. I had a topfin airpump the thing was a piece of shit, didn't even pump enough air for one bubble wand, and it was supposedly for a 30-60 gallon tank. needless to say I took it back the next day

The people at petsmart probably don't know what they're talking about.

These might actually be cheaper than you can get in a pet store, even with shipping.

These are a lot nicer since the temperature control is on the cord not on the heater

Well, not wanting to drive back to the other side of town for $13, i decided to experiment. I cut a hole into a rubbermaid about 1/4" from the bottom, in the middle of the long side. I inserted the heater just past the "indicated water level" line, and epoxy-ed it in place. Put a big steel nut-looking thing around the heater near the submerged end, so it wouldn't contact the rubbermaid above. Its been 2 days now and i have no leakage from the area around the heater, and the incubator works perfectly. The heat control is on the "top" of the pump (now sticking out of the side of the tub, so you can adjust the temp without opening or disassembling the TiT. I also made a small plexiglass window and mounted the thermometer against it (thermometer has probe at the bottom) so i can read the temps w/o opening (dont worry no light gets in). I get a constant reading of 86-87 at the bottom and 80-82 at the top...ill try to get some pictures up if anyone would like to see

BTW it is a 50W heater...which is supposed to be suitable for a 10Gal tank. I keep it at about 75-80% power.

Its not quite a "tit-bomb" as the heating element is not contained...but the ability to be able to check the temp and adjust the heater w/o losing heat through loss of insulation seems very beneficial.

Get a fully submersible heater. I put up a post a few minutes ago, damn thing broke and shocked the SHIT out of me. It's worth it and a 300watt heter is only 35 bucks at petco.
