Which is better?
    #3783930 - 02/15/05 04:50 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Before I pop the question, I'll protect it with this:
It refers to personal life, jobs, family, love, matrial possesions etc. Achievments in knowledge or scientific work do not count, they are for the good fo all and are not personal.

Is it better to hold on to your dreams and decide you MUST make your life the way you dream, you must get a certain job, you must win the woman/girl you fell in love with, you must see piramids in your lifetime, you must experience this or that...

or

Let go of all your dreams, and make your current life and whatever it brings you your dream. Let those things you have and things that come a long be your standard and enjoy them

or to rephrase it...

Be guided by your dreams?

or

Guide your dreams?

in your personal opinion/life phylosophy of course

From a buddhist point of view, it is much better to guide your dreams and accept whatever comes your way. If you try to be guided by your dreams then you will ultimately face a lifetime of disapointment.

A dream is just a dream, while its ok to have them, enormous amounts of time and energy are wasted in their pursuit. Just know that they are fundamentally unrealistic in that things will never turn out as you want them too.

Consider the materialistic life, its a state of complete agitation and conflict. You can never fix things to be the way you want, You cant just wake up in the morning and decide exactly how you want the day to unfold. Forget about weeks, months, or years; you cant even predetermine one day. If i were to ask you right now if you could get up in the morning and set exactly how your day was going to go; how you were going to feel in each moment, what would you say? there's no way you could do that, is there?

No matter how much you make yourself materially comfortable, no matter how you arrange your house, you can never manipulate your mind in the same way. You can never determine the way your going to feel all day. How can you fix your mind like that? How can you say, "Today im going to be like this"? I can tell you with absolute certainity, as long as your mind is uncontrolled, agitated, and dualistsic, there is no way; its impossible. When i say this, im not putting you down; im just talking about the way the mind works.

You were speaking directly to me? How could you put me down?
Which version do you think I am for, the first or the second?

It was an open statement for whomever reads it but partially directed at people who subscribe to your first catagory.

If you read your post again, it will become obvious which is the better choice.

So, were you looking for some kind of affirmation of your beliefs?

Surley you knew that most people here would agree with the seound option.

This is a spirituality forum after all.

I ask you again, did you post this for some kind of ego affirmation?

No, this is like an anquette. I want to know how many people think one way and how many think the other way, and which people think one way and which think the other way. I am dysecting you all and collecting information to know what makes you tick. the more I learn about people on this forum, the more their posts seem predictable.

Many of our dreams come from basic impulses. Ever hear you shouldn't grocery shop when you are hungry, or buy condoms when you are horny?

Dreams and hope are ESSENTIAL to at least my sanity and sometimes thats all I have to go on.

But no matter how big of a proponent you say you are of the first option, you have a healthy dose of the second. If you didn't, your wax and feather wings would have already melted in the sun's intensity.

To add: If you only ascribe to the first option, all you will ever do is just that, dream. If what you want to do in life is see the pyramids, without bending that fantasy into the frame of reality it won't happen. Reality has a slim chance against Imagination when you apply it full force.

isn't this fairly typical of Sinbad? to know (and not just believe) which course of action is the best, under any circumstances and for all people?

if i think i can accomplish a dream- i'll hold on it
if i judge it beyond my ability- i'll appreciate what i got

Both of these choices are folly. One should decide what dreams one wants to embrace before one decides to follow ones dreams. A person should be aware of the consequences and rewards of following ones dream. So, the first step is to reevaluate your dreams, and break them down into straight line goals, then you should procede strategically. Most people's dreams change from moment to moment because most people never really know what they want. If one follows their dream...and their dream keeps changing, then they get nowhere. Imagine following a map that changes every time you look at it.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda
