sweet flush pics

after expermenting with brf cakes {they suck} and moving on to rye, i must say im impressed. this one was cased on the bottom about 1 inch about 3 too 4 inches of rye and about 1 inch casing 50/50 peat/verm. im posting this one cause it was the best. i found the trays cased just on the top did not produce as much and the second flush was nothing to write home about. this one is producing its second flush now and looks almost as good as the first. wet weight was almost 130 grams not counting the aborts. i only weigh the full grown ones. i made some nice prints and i hope to make working needles.

also i ment to ask. i heard some say casing on the bottom is a waste of casing. i found it gives me better a better harvest, im thinking that its because the extra water content the bottom layer provides. any1 here disagree or know something i dont. any info is apperciated.

i also think it gives it more water when it needs it, after all, they like wet/humid conditions right?

peace, :mushroom2:

Silent, yes they do like humid conditions, but that is why you keep your (top) casing layer at "near saturation".  Check this link for more info on "near saturation".  However, once you case your substrate you want it to be focused on colonizing the upper casing and then pinning at the appropriate time.  As far as i'm concerned adding a casing layer on the bottom is just distracting the mycellium, hence trying to colonize downward as well...  top casing layer is really all that is needed, as long as you keep your conditions optimal :stoned:

sleep, i understand what you are saying about the myc growing, but i was told by someone with more expercince then me that after the second flush and a dunk, there is no need to patch or recase, just turn it over and you have a nice fully colonized casing laying ready to pin, have not tried it yet but i will soon. any one know if this will work or is it a waste of time.. thanks for the feedback peeps.

i've never heard of that before, but thinking about it screams overlay to me... not 100% sure on that though..

well i find out soon and ill post the results and some pics. my friend said it works great seeing as the bottom is never exposed to light and from what i see on the trays i double cased, there is myc growth but not so much as to cause overlay, and after a duck, witch to me is also a cold shock since i keep them in the fridge druing dunking, i can only hope it will pin right away, only a experment but i hope it works cause im tired of crappy third flushes. also would a light patch take care of anyoverlay prolbems?

crappy third flushes??? what are you using for your casing mix should be the question... if you're using a verm/coir mix, then you should really consider adding a ph buffer (oyster shell, hydrated lime, cleaned/dried/powdered egg shells from breakfast) to your casing material. this will help keep the casing material at the right ph level since mycellium piss makes the casing acidic, thus successive flushes aren't as great as expected...

patching can help with overlay if you catch it quick enough. if it mats down and gets hard then you're in trouble...

Here's some pics of my breakfast egg shells dried in the oven at 400F until crisp and starting to brown, then ground in a coffee grinder... works well, and its free

also, i haven't used peat, but i'm pretty sure i remember reading that a ph buffer is almost a must with that stuff... i'll look into it and post what i find...

EDIT: upon further searching, i'm pretty much 100% that you need to be using a ph buffer when working with peat... it'll definately help with later flushes...

you don't need much at all, 1 tablespoon to a quart of casing is all you need...
