50/50+casing/green tricho again!

This is my 4th casing try. I've read casing for dummies and lots of other casing advice here. I autoclave 50/50+ casing in a filter patch bag. I sterilize the foil containers I put the substrate in a bag and crumble.. so my hands don't touch it. I wear gloves and mask, use a sterile spoon. I cover it with foil, poke a few small holes. . I keep it in the dark.I stopped opening and cking.(used to) I don't spray during colonization and overwater.( did that before) I keep a hepa filter running 24/7. I finally get mycelial growth into the casing.. put in chamber/grow light-12hrs. Humidity 85-92%kept with small pan of perlite with H202in water. And hand spraying same. Temp 76-80. I spray lysol-everytime- before lifting lid. I wear a mask. I fan-5-6xday. And I see green again. I sprayed it down with H202 straight, not diluted. Now there's no mycelium to be seen in the casing layer at all. The h202 prolly killed it or atleast set it back. I thought the lime was so supposed to be so great in keeping the contams down. The 50/50+ also seems to look like a rock. I don't want to spray too much because of fear of making it crust over.( did that before too and then I had to deep scratch, which didn't do a thing and I lost the casing) When it seemed dry- I sprayed with h20 then I got green..it's yellowish green.. from what I've read..this is the green trichoderma mold. This time, I didn't spray even when it looked dry and I still got the green shit. I'm so sick of this. I see all these great yields and everyone saying casing casing..is the way to go. Disgusted newbie. Help please.

Patzee-you're not alone. Even us very experienced cultivators are baffled from time to time with contamination. My suggestion is to work backwards-just use pure vermiculite. With less available nutrients in the casing layer, you don't have much of a chance of contamination. Also, remember that stagnant air and high CO2 levels gives these contaminants a head start over the desired mycelium. Furthermore, you don't want to sterilize your casing layer because you're killing some beneficial bacteria that helps the mycelium fight off contaminants. If you're not using just pure vermiculite, pasteurize the casing material it in your oven at 180-200 degrees F. for about 1.5 hrs. If using vermiculite, just sterilize it.

You are definitely not alone. We tried 50/50 four times - each one lost to contams. We finally said F*** this shit. Went to Coco Fiber. Works like a dream, no contams since. Don't have to pasturize either. I believe it is the best casing material out there. If you can find it, give it a try, you won't be dissappointed.

Thanks Modor and Azure. ( I had to spray the green shit away again today) I've read many a post about coco fiber. I don't remember if I show a vendor. If you have a place to buy from, could you post? Those coconuts can travel a thousand miles in the ocean and not decay. Makes sense. Try again.

> My suggestion is to work backwards-just use pure vermiculite. Yes, diffeinitely buy a different brand of your casing materials. I use pasteurized coco coir with great success.
