Boosting Humidity...?
    #3778360 - 02/14/05 01:12 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

For a fruiting chamber, I'm using a Poor Man's Pod design (with perlite). I've been looking for condensation as a sign of good humidity levels (but there is a hygrometer on the way). The walls have been sprayed with warm water on at least two occasions, but there is little to no condensation.

I decided to place two small bowls (both sanitized) of hot water into the pod next to the cakes. I'm hoping the additional water vapor (and temporary increase in temperature) will provide a "boost" in humidity that will last a few days. Comments?

condensation is a sign of temp fluxuations not high humidity. it is because warm air can hold more water than cold air. when the temps shift the condensation builds up

That makes sense. About an hour has passed since placing the bowls of hot water, and I can now see quite a bit of condensation on the underside of the clear plastic wrap (lid). Does this condensation mean the temperature wasn't high enough? Is it just a matter of time for the water to saturate the air?

If it is cooler in the chamber (due to the water, bong effect) then outside the chamber it will take forever to build up moisture on the sides..cold glass of water type of thing.

Is your pod sealed well? If not that may be a large part of it. If you get fed up trying to keep your humidity at an adequate level, you might just want to scratch the pod idea and get a container, lay down some wet paper towels and just mist the sides of your container 3-4 times daily and keep the container sealed very tightly.

I have the same problem and my shroomies seem real small and feeble in comparison to my usual grows.

According to my hygrometer, this trick works really well. I recommend it to growers with over-sized fruiting chambers.

I'm confused...If you're having a low humidity issue, how would placing a cake directly on perlite raise humidity?

My pod is kept very sterile, but perhaps I should add a drop or two of H2O2 to these water reservoirs?

I've got a similar prob...just set up a small 19 qt rubbermaid container with perilite and can't get it to consistently keep the humidity above 85% (so the hygrometer reads). I'm spraying like 3-4 times a day but thats kind of a hassle. Plus, I'm going to be leaving for five days this week and the cakes will be left unattended. I have an aquarium pump puttin' in fresh air so I think I'm good on that end but the humidity has got me worried. Any tips/hints/advice from the vets here that can help me out?

Have you considered doing what I mentioned?

Yeah, and I'm about to. Gonna put two small bowls filled with hot water and watch the hydrometer. I think I might try calibrating it cause I sprayed mucho aqua in the container and the meter still didn't get above like 82%. Ever try the ultrasonic method for automization?

I'm not familiar with the ultrasonic method, but the PMP is already automated. Using small reservoirs of hot water is a one time thing. They boost and keep humidity at optimum levels (usually within a half hour). If this trick doesn't wok for you, your pod may not be sealed.

ultrasonic= using an ultrasonic humidifier to put out a mist to keep up humidity...check it: http://www.earthstongue.com/site/388422/page/63096

lookin' into the the PMP...seems like the way to go. I do have a myco bag full of corn that I obtained and inocculated with EQ. Gonna have to find the best way to grow this in some casing in another container. Hopefully it'll colonize well.
