i have 6 cakes that i didn't have time to sterilize or innoculate so i just tossed the jars in the corner, thinking i would sterilize them later. i forgot, and now, three days later i check back and they are covered in what appears to be cobweb mold, but no bad smells, in fact, it smells quite pleasent, like a portabella. anyone know what it is?

Most likely what you said it looked like...Cobweb mold. Cobweb does smell like mold though not that mushroomy mycelium smell. It smells like an old damp basement somewhat...not unpleasant but not pleasing. People's interpreptations of smells can be different. I very much doubt you have a contamed jar growing portabella mycelium though. Once my aquantince left a container used for mixing substrate out for 2 days inadvertantly...when he went to wash it it was covered on the entire enterior with about 1"-1 1/2" of cobweb mold. Definitely got some contam in the air here. hah
