"fear" yoghurt mushroom
    #3777599 - 02/14/05 09:16 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Firstly, as a newcomer, hello to you all! living where magic mushrooms grow allover I have no problems finding them, what I am seeking is a little more unusual. I used to have a small yoghurt mushroom, It was a small white grisley fungi. I kept it in water and when I wanted yoghurt I put it in milk overnight. It was given me by a German man I met in the mountains of Wales. Someone took it many years ago. I've never heard of the mushrooms again, but would now like to know if anyone has any information about them? It is called "fear" on some Japanese sites but there's obvious difficulties searching through those. If you know anything would you mail me please?

Many thanks Speeker, I'm not sure if it was kefir but the name fits. Also I saw some pictures of kefir culture and they look very similar.
Mine was kept in water and grew very slowly, also it made a litre of set yoghurt overnight when placed in milk. I feel a little closer now.

I look for answers and present ideas, but in no way shape or form endorse, or partake in, growing, or manufacture of substances, or plants, or any specie that is illegal in your neck of the woods. I do however, tear the tags off of my mattresses. Be warned.

As far as I know they aren't illegal, how can a wild thing be illegal? As for your mattress, it will go in holes where you tear it, maybe that's why you do it?

I have found several kefir-sharing sites and have some grains on the way. I will freely share the grains I grow with anyone interested in UK as they are doing in other countries.
Here is a koan for you: Many feet make a path. :sun:

It is a fungi but not really a mushroom. It's very active as it makes very good yoghurt and grows bigger so that you can share it's benefits with other people. Good for the digestive and immune systems.
I have now 6established that it's prper name is "kefir" rather than "fear"

Not necessarily. He/she may need to increase the dose.

A mushroom that makes yogurt overnight? Hmm...
That is a new one. Sounds interesting.

Quote:

Kefir vs. Yogurt

While both kefir and yogurt are cultured milk products, they contain different types of beneficial bacteria. Yogurt contains transient beneficial bacteria that keep the digestive system clean and provide food for the friendly bacteria that already are present. Kefir actually colonizes the intestinal tract -- a feat that yogurt cannot match.

Additionally, Kefir contains several major strains of friendly bacteria not commonly found in yogurt: Lactobacillus Caucasus, Leuconostoc, Acetobacter species, and Streptococcus species. It also contains beneficial yeasts, such as Saccharomyces kefir and Torula kefir, which dominate, control and eliminate destructive pathogenic yeasts in the body by penetrating the mucosal lining where unhealthy yeast and bacteria reside -- forming a virtual SWAT team that housecleans and strengthens the intestines. Consequently, the body becomes more efficient in resisting pathogens like E. coli and intestinal parasites.

Kefir's active yeast and bacteria provide more nutritive value than yogurt by helping digest the foods that you eat and by keeping the colon environment clean and healthy. The curd size of kefir is smaller than yogurt, so it?s also easier to digest, making it an ideal food for babies, the elderly, and anyone with digestive disorders

Colonizes the intestinal tract?

This sounds more like a microbe "brew" rather than a mushroom that is solely responsible. Sorta like Kombucha, it is a whole bunch of microbial organisms (bacteria and yeast?) that work to create the Kefir. Searching for it will reveal plenty of sites that have parent cultures. Interesting indeed...

Thank you for the link Atwar.
Yes Anoddlittleplace I feel quite happy that I shall have some soon.
Oddone, there are many ways of reaching a heightened state of awareness, have you read any Carlos Castaneda? I think a body that's clean on the inside will operate better in every dimension so I'm looking forward to my kefir grains.

I think with things like this that maintain your gut you do have to go through the initial dumping!
I would like to know what you know of the Fisher King, (fischer?) and 40 fat fairies if you dare!
