can you overpack your jars with substrate?
    #3776359 - 02/13/05 11:59 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone. I am just starting my first batch, I think I may have packed te substrate in the jars fairly tightly. Is this going to cause me serious problems? I just don't really know.

Thanks

Yes, the harder you pack it, the LONGER it will take for them to colonize. Hard enough and they may not do anything at all. If you have already injected them, then i guess keep them around for awhile to see if they colonize before they contam. Either way, make a new batch and just lightly sprinkle it in if you want to see results anytime soon.

Better to not pack at all. Let the substrate fall in the jars, this will give you good pockets for colonization.

>id like to make a veryyyy veryyy detailed step by step tek for "just" the filling of pf jars.

Step 1-10:
"Using a spoon, fill the subtrate into the jar very loosely, without tamping it down whatsoever"

i understand its easy, i figure the more teks for the smallest of details the better. Obviously these problems arise and the less questions that get asked on the forum about them the better. Just my opinion though, not trying to nag on anyone or anything =)

Nothing personal...but this is pretty simple stuff...and real basic.

The more teks that come out...the more complicated it gets for newbies.

The solution might be adding to the PF tek...Do not pack the substrate into the jar's, it will slow down colonization.

Oh and about the less questions answered in the forum part...newbies will always ask questions without looking for the answers.
I guess if we didn't want to answer questions this wouldn't be a Message Board...it would be a Web page just for viewing.

I personally like to help people.

Agreed. I also, although I'm new, try my best to help. As i gain more knowledge for myself I try and regurgitate it for the people who have taken my place under me as i move up one more answer in my understating of growing. Your probably right though, the more simple simple teks the more complicated it would be for everyone. Probably the best idea is your suggestion of just updating the teks.

And i didn't mean to sound like asking questions wasn't a good thing, i ask many a week =)
