We make Panaeolus substrate in the following manner: Ingredients: Dried cow dung, vermiculite and soaked straw (submerged in water for 12 hours) For 4 standard spawn bags we use: 1/2 kilogram dry straw, 4 liters of dried dung, 3 liters of vermiculite and 3-4 liters of water Dung and vermiculite are mixed Water is added and the mixture is stirred The result will look like this Soaked straw is added And mixed in close up This is filled into autoclavable spawn bags The flaps are folded and the bags are put into the pressure cooker. A lid is put on top to prevent the bags from blocking the steam valve After sterilisation the bags are allowed to cool down in the flowcabinet Two jars with Panaeolus cyanescens spawn The bags are opened and 300 ml of spawn is poured in The bags are sealed with an impulse sealer The bags are shaken and put in a warm place to incubate

why dosn't any of your stuff end up in the grow/find section? a few q's. Autoclave bags obviously have better heat resistance than freezer bags. Can you use the regular sealers you can buy for $30 or do i have to wait till i can shell out for an impulse? Your grain spawn doesn't look completely colonized. How did you get such even colonization without having room in the jars to shake it? also, if it isn't completely colonized, how do you prevent contamination? is your work area just that steril?

>>why dosn't any of your stuff end up in the grow/find section? << I don't know ;-) But it will certainly end up in the "Methods" section of our website. >>a few q's. Autoclave bags obviously have better heat resistance than freezer bags. Can you use the regular sealers you can buy for $30 or do i have to wait till i can shell out for an impulse? << I don't think you can pressure cook freezer bags. They are often made of PE (polyethylene) IF they are made of PP (polypropylene) or nylon then you can pressure cook them. We have never used a "cheap" sealer but i think it will not work. The bags are pretty tough and they require an absolutely tight seal. >>Your grain spawn doesn't look completely colonized<< It might not look so but it really is. The appearance of Panaeolus mycelium on rye is completely different than that of Psilocybe cubensis. The mycelium is not so dense and appears a bit "flaky". >>How did you get such even colonization without having room in the jars to shake it?<< There is enough room to shake it and the mycelium itself does not hold the grain firmly together as that of cubensis. These jars were inoculated with an agar square and inubated for 10 days with regular shaking. >>how do you prevent contamination? is your work area just that steril?<< Yes it is. Actually we have a fullsized HEPA filtered flow cabinet. I'm hapy to report that the bags are colonising nicely. Within one day the spawn showed aggresive recovery and it's now colonising the substrate itself. A problem is thoroughly mixing the spawn with the substrate as the two have a completely different structure. The grain just falls through and collects on the bottom of the bags.

Una and MushMush's contributions to the community will be found in our new grow sections. We are working on making some changes to those sections, and the new sections will be full of great stuff from mushmush.nl Thanks Una, keep up the great work!

So do you friut right in the bag? Or do you wait until 100% colinization then put in a container?

im doing pretty much the same way...first grainspawn and then bags with strawpellets/dung(horse or cow) /vermiculite7 chalk...the bags i use now are stamets filter-bags...results look good so far...when they are fineshed i crumble them in trays and case them...usually i let recover the spawn before casinf for 1-2 days to see if any molds develop... BiO.

I do almost the same as Una and you BiO, but I gave up on straw lately. I think im allergic to it so when I am near it im like scratching and itching and stuff. so now I use compost/chalk/verm. I then nuke it in the microwave for 15 minutes inside this sealable bag, which is very pourous so air exchange is high. its very cheap, but wouldnt stand the heat of a pcooker.
