It is always fun to start a new grow! it never seems to fade weather you are making a couple of cakes

Or getting ready to fill a big fruiting chamber.

Just Wait. The worst is waiting for your substrate to colonize. But once it does... it's fuckin beautiful!!

Yeah, I love growing mushrooms. I get so excited when I'm doing it or getting ready for a grow. I try not to think about it though so I don't keep checking on them every 5 minutes. Takes A LOT of self-discipline.

I always get really excited when the first pins show up..  I run in to my ol' lady and yell "WE GOT PINS!"

She just rolls her eyes at me... and calls me a freak..

I'm on my first grow too, and it's the only thing on my mind. It's hard to focus at work, hard to do my homework, hard to do any damn thing that doesn't involve shrooms. It would be better if I actually had something to do with them besides wait for them to colonize. I've got 6 jars 90% colonized, just waiting on that last tiny bit and they're taking their sweet time doing it. It seems like they went from 20% colonization to 90% almost overnight, then stopped. It's damn annoying, because i'm this close to birthing them and starting on the final phase of the grow, but not quite there yet. It's pretty damn hard on my nerves. What makes it worse is I've never tripped before in my life, not on any hallucinogen, so I have no idea what it's like. I've read a bunch, and talked to friends, so I kind of have an idea what it's like, but I know it's nothing compared to what I'll actually experience. I just can't imagine actually seeing stuff that isn't really happening. Anyway, the point is, yes we all get excited about growing, it's an awesome hobby and I'm glad I'm able to do it.

Excerpt from one of my textbooks:
Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

did you try cold shocking those jars that are stuck at 90% colonization?

How would cold shocking help them finish colonizing? Cold shocking is to help induce fruiting isn't it? I just flipped all of them and if they don't finish up in a week I'm going to cut off the uncolonized parts and fruit them anyway.

Good plan.

Yes, cold shocking is supposed to stop mycellium growth and initiates fruiting.

It's weird tho, because if you cold-shock in the jar then birth and roll in dry verm, the mycellium seems to start a period of fuzzy growth which is then followed by the formation of knots and pins. So while cold shocking may stop big mycellium growth, if your spots are small it seems to tell the mycellium to do that last little bit of growth then stop.

I don't know the technical details of this or why it happens, I just know that doing this takes care of those spots. If they're not real big.

whats the significance of flipping the jars upside down doing for the mycelium growth?

The reason behind flipping is to drain the CO2 out of the jars. Mushrooms are like us, they use oxygen and release CO2. Since CO2 is heavier than air, it collects at the bottom of the jar. If you leave it in there, it can slow down mycelium growth. If you flip the jars, the CO2 can escape out the bottom of the jar and be replaced by fresh air. Some people flip their jars and say it's great, some say don't bother. I've flipped all of mine (my first grow) and I'm not really sure yet whether it's helped or not.

I definatly know what you mean, i have just started a grow, and it does take all your might just to not check on them every 20 min, i havn't checked on them for 2 days (long time it seems..) and i can't wait for them to fruit...its nerve racking!! but once they are fully conlonized then your in the clear...anyways yeah its pretty exciting. no matter how many times i do it, its still just as exciting..

peace :mushroom2:
