You? Me?
    #3774476 - 02/13/05 04:34 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

What do you think makes you you. If you lost all your limbs would you still be you? What if their was surgery that could place your brain in another host body, would you still be you? What if your brain could be replaced piece by piece over time with cybernetic parts? By replacing a single part of your brain would you cease to be? What about when the last piece was replaced?

If your entire consciousness could be transferred to a machine would you still be you?

You are confusing yourself with your body. We are not our bodies, our minds are'nt our brains.

I don't believe in a "spirit" or some recognizable or sentient part that lives on after physical death. So if you die with your body what makes you you?

How can the mind die? Investigate what your mind is, and see if you can find that which thinks. Im sure you wont be able to find anything that exists that you can label as 'mind'. Therefore how can something that is essentially unborn or non-existent die?

Electrical impulses? Electrochemical reactions can be found that closely relate to specific emotions, thoughts, feelings .. etc. Once those electrochemical reactions end I believe the being ceases to be. Well at least we don't currently have the technology to extect life beyond that end.

This ego which I identify with as myself is merely the result of a lifetime of thoughts and experiences percieved subjectively through the mind and senses of a growing and ever-changing body which I identify as my own.

Can you seriously be saying that all that we are as human beings is electrical impulses? Don't you have even a slight suspicion that we are something more than our physical bodies? Analytically observe every aspect of your body and try to find that self-existing entity you call 'I'. Then do the same with your mind. You may discover something about the nature of consciousness.

Thoughts, emotions, all of it could be simulated on a computer without any consciousness. The question is, who is it that is aware of those thoughts and feelings? Who is experiencing thoughts and emotions?
Who is experiencing electrochemical reactions? Are electrochemical reactions aware of themselfs?

Don't you have even a slight suspicion that we are something more than our physical bodies?

No. But that is just my belief which I doubt science could ultimately prove only substantiate.

Then do the same with your mind.

Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. I don't see how that relates to "being" living on after the death of all the parts.

I guess my main question was at what point of mechanical replacement would you stop being you or would that point never come?
