    #3774370 - 02/13/05 03:50 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

will mycelium ever die. say it had all the nutrients it needed, the perfect environment.will it live for 20 30 years? will it ever die if it was maintained at 85 degrees never allowed to fruit and had all the nutrients it needed.

It is genetically designed to die. It is BORN from a spore, if fortunate, it will run it?s life cycle & produce more spores. Thus, life goes on.

For long term preservation of a culture, you have it backwards. Remove nutrients, air & store in sterile water. That will suspend the life cycle for years. Add warmth, air & nutrients and it will reanimate & grow again

Very true in my experience.

I have mycelium cultures that are over 2 years old...that are suspended in sterile water...sitting in my frig.

I just used one last week and it is starting up some jars now.

that one is in the PNW, there is another in michigan, I dont think its 8500 years old though

Quote:

Many species of soil fungi have their hyphae intimately attached to the roots of forest trees in a symbiotic association called mycorrhizae ("fungus-roots"). Some mycorrhizal associations can be enormous. A single individual of Armillaria bulbosa has been discovered that permeates more than 30 acres of forest soil in northern Michigan and may be one of the world's largest living organisms. Some scientists speculate that it was spawned by a single spore thousands of years ago. Another Armillaria in Washington was recently found to consist of a subterranean mycelial network with erect, above-ground mushrooms covering more than a thousand acres of forest soil.
