I recently purchased an N95 type gas mask, the type used by mold-removal workers, chemical workers, etc. It specifically blocks against mold spores. I'm going to use it while inspecting my jars, I want to be as safe as possible to avoid possible sickness. When you come across a contaminated jar, I know the usual advice is to toss it, this is what I've been doing. However, it can be really tough to find Mason jars in Canada in the winter, I usually have to custom orde them which is a real pain. Do you think it would be ok to clean out the jars while wearing the mask? I was going to clean out the jars in the basement, dumping the contaminated rye in garbage bags for immediate disposal. Immediately after I would take a shower and wash the clothes I had been wearing.
You can also fill sink 3/4 full of hot soapy water & bleach solution, sink jar, hold down, twist lid slightly & let jar fill (Hint, have plenty of deep soapy bubbles on surface, to trap any spores that escape as, air bubbles out of jar.). Then tighten lid. Let jar stand a day, take outside, emtpy in trash can. Wash out, put in dishwasher & run it.
Dishwashers really help. never had a problem. Dishwashing detergent for the dish washer contains sodium hypochlorate (bleach)also the dry cycle gets very hot. Just take the jar outside to empty and rinse so you keep airborne particles to a minimal then throw into the dishwasher.
