Questions about droplets on the mycelium...
    #3773766 - 02/13/05 10:07 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

My cakes are PF tek, except that I used rye flour. They colonized very fast and everything seems fine. I have two terrariums, the other one which includes cakes a week younger than the other one. They are simple plastic containers with wet vermiculite on bottom for humidification. On top of the vermiculite, I have small boxes with crumbled cakes topped with a very thin layer of moist, sterilized vermiculite.

The younger cakes have been in the terrarium for some days now, and the others have been there over a week now. The older ones have just started to pin, but not very much. On these ones I have once sprayed the casings on spots without mycelium to add moisture (don't know if this was a mistake, I thought they'd be too dry without some extra...)

Now, the thing I'm puzzled about is that there are these small water drops that I can see everywhere on the mycelium (talking about the more developed casings now). The water drops are so small that I need to look really closely, and they are kind of surrounded by the mycelium. It's strange. I thought this would mean too much humidity, but on the other hand the small pins that are just developing have a little bit of mycelium growing on the caps. I thought this was a sign of too little humidity?

Are the water drops on mycelium a bad thing, and do you think I have too much or too little moisture?

Thanks for any input.

first, for humidity you should be using perlite, not vermiculite and the water
droplets are not a something to worry about, misting is fine but dont spray the
cakes directly and stop misting after the pins start to form

Thats a sign of high humidity not low humidity.

The guide says it's the other way around.

There is little mycelium on the caps anymore, now that they've started to grow. And the container walls are sweating like crazy (and I have four small holes on the top!).

So, I think perlite would be too much. And I have to point out that the air humidity is relatively low here. So vermiculite works fine. No reason to use perlite.
