yet another casing question
    #3770948 - 02/12/05 03:09 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

i need to know how many 1/2 pint jars of colonized mycelium i would need to case a tupeware casing that is 10"x15"x5". thank you for all your help. i am prolly gonna use a 1" casing layer on bottom and a 1/2" casing layer on top of substrate.

i think maybe 4-5 cakes would be your best bet, i would suggest a much higher number , but i just realized your height was only 5" - which isnt much room for them to grow..
the 4-5 cakes might give you substrate of a little over an inch CRUMBLED!
so plus your inch on bottom and that 1/2 inch on top, that comes out to nearly 3 inches already...it will shrink a little bit...but the number's a pretty good approximate i would think...that gives about 2 inches for them to grow before they hit the lid...
hope this helps!
good luck!

I assumed the tupperware is to hold the cased substrate only, and to be placed in a bigger fruiting chamber.

that is correct anno, the tupeware is holding the casing mix/substrate only and then it is going into a 15 gal sterlite fruiting chamber.. you think 20 1/2 pints would be enough for that size of a container? that would give me a 2" substrate..

one quick question, are you fruiting it within the tupperware, or are you fruiting in another chamber as anno said?

2'' substrate and 1/2 '' casing is ok, although 3 '' substrate is ok too.

Well, in case contamination strikes , it is wiser to have several smaller casings.

so if i was going to use this big casing.. would it be wise while i mist the casings directly for the first few days it is in the fruiting chamber until it pins to add about a 10% h2o2 solution to the water?

I always add h202 to my misting water maybe 5% but i dont think 10% would hurt.

Use h2o2 in misting water not alcohol.3% for misting and 10% for fighting cobweb mold.
