2 Questions about Casing...
    #3770086 - 02/12/05 05:30 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I am going to start casing in a week or so and I am trying to plan ahead a little bit. My first question concerns my mix and if it sounds ok. I plan to 50/50 coir/verm with 1tbsp. of hydrated lime per quart of coir/verm. I also planned to add a heaping tbsp. of diatamaceous (spelling? lol) earth. Does that sound like a good mix? I intended to add the lime to help with contams and the d. earth to help with water retention in the casing layer.

My second question relates to how long casing material can be kept if it is sterilized. I found some half gallon mason jars at the grocery store that I can fit 4 of in my PC. So I planned to fill 4 of these big jars near full of premaid casing material, PC them, and use what I need. If I don't open one or more of the jars, how long would it stay sterilized and/or viable? I just think the idea of having pre-made and pre-sterile casing material avialable at anytime is pretty cool. Thank you in advance for any information.

Vermiculite and coir already do an excellent job on water retention.
If you are using hydrated lime, you should test the pH of the casing, since it can easily get to high. Better use limestone flour.

The sterilized casing can be kept in a closed container for months.
