Question about frost bite
    #3768577 - 02/11/05 10:19 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

My friend went to work today, and despite having on boots and 2 pairs of socks, managed to get frostbitten feet. She is supposed to work out in the cold again tommorrow, and will be on her feet the whole time. I am wondering if she should be worried and call off work? I would be inclined to think so, but can't find any kind of reference as to how long one should stay off their feet after getting frostbite.

Isn't frostbite dead tissue that can never re-heal? If I'm not mistaken. She should probably get those foot warmer insoles they sell up north those are nice.

Total abstinence is so excellent a thing that it cannot be carried to too great an extent. In my passion for it I even carry it so far as to totally abstain from total abstinence itself.

Frostbite can be serious. I would opt to go see a doctor tomorrow rather than go back to work and worsen the condition.

I can't believe she got frostbite at work though! If my feet were getting that cold I'd tell the boss to shove it up his ass and I'd go get warm!! My health is more important than any job.

Yeah, my friend is not one to complain. She was outside directing traffic, and then went inside and sat down for a little, and then went to do some security checks, and thankfully her feet hurt so bad she started to cry. I say thankfully , becuase no one would have known otherwise. Her feet were white, and the medic at where she was at treated her for frostbite. They look ok now, but she says they still burn and hurt to walk on : (

she should let her feet heal from the necrosis before spending much time on her feet at all, and not expose herself to those conditions untill she gets some well ventilated boots and socks.

i'm guessing her boots where tied too tight and she was wearing cotton cocks, both horrible ideas in any temps much below 32f.

too much insulation with inadequate ventilation will cause sewating. the miosture from sweating will retaerd the insulative properties of cotton to a frightening degree. wool socks breathe better and ratain more heat even when saturated with water. acryli/woll blends are the next bet for those sensitive to wool and 100% acrylic is the best after that and is ideal for those who are allergic to wool.

if conditions are too cold for a properly insulated and well ventilated sock/boot combination, lower/slower exertion and down boots are adivsable this shouldn't be the case unless temps are *realy* low, like -80f].
