microwave liquid culture info

i've been doing some searching on this site and on google and i can't seem to find information about using the microwave as opposed to the pressure cooker to prepare honey/karo/dextrose & malt for a liquid culture. i know that i've read claims of using the microwave to success, but i can't find any definitive or thorough explanations. anyone have experience with the microwave and liquid culture? also, do you think the grocery store has dry malt and dextrose, or are they specific to homebrew stores? thanks.

I have done the honeywater tek many times in the microwave. I just nuke it for 3min, shake it around a bit, nuke for another 3min, let cool.

I always use a microwave to sterilize my liquid cultures; much faster than PCing it.  It's easiest if you use a gladware or ziplock plastic storage container.  Mix up your honey/karo/whatever with water and place a piece of plastic wrap over the container, don't stretch it out too tight or the steam will make it stretch and tear.  Then lightly place the lid on top; don't seal it.  Microwave for 4-5 minutes.  When finished, give it a few seconds for any steam to escape then press the lid down.  You can then put it in the fridge or freezer to cool it down fast, and it'll be ready to use.

:goodluck:

The key to liquid culture besides the fluid & nutrients is MINIMAL exposure to unfiltered air. Normal unfiltered air carries about 100,000 microscopic particulates per cubic feet, many of which are mold, tric & other contam spores.

In other words, 1 cubic foot of unfilter air, is a contam BOMB - waiting to happen. All it needs is a place with nutes, moisture & various temps.

Other key to liquid culture is a CLEAR container, so you can fully veiw & carefully inspect it for contaminates.

Suggest if you are going to try microwave liquid culture, do so in a CLEAR GLASS JAR, with PLASTIC microwaveable lid.
