space heating for jars
    #3766585 - 02/11/05 02:49 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Right now it is pretty cold where I am and I am having super slow colonization of bags. I have a little reptile heater pad inside this wooden chest, but it just isn't cutting it. It is right by the heater, but it aint really economical to run the heater 247 raising my heating bill by 40-50 bucks a month

Build a TnT for around $25.00 in materials, it will solve your heating issues.

Oh the tub in tub thing right. I have seen pictures, so the bottom tub has a aquarium heater while the top tub is the incubator, with water in the bottom tub and spacers. I looked it up on search . Now the only question is what kind of wattage, I see 200-300 watts on ebay

Anywhere from 50-300 watts will work fine. You'll be better off worrying about getting one with a temp probe, MUCH easier to set and change the heat since the controller isnt in the water and it reads temp from where your jars are, not in the water. Wattage wont really matter, it'll get the tubs up to the correct slower maybe but it'll maintain it and you should only need to get it up to temp when you first install it, so yanno..

Depends on the size of your incubator....and how cold it is where your incubator is located.

But don't use too large of a submerible aquarium heater or it will be turning on and off all the time...and this isn't good for the unit...they will wear out faster...or so I was told.

And if you get one too small...it won't heat up the incubator enough.

Your heat pad will not raise your electric bill by that much. The heat pads are the most efficient heat source. If it is not hot enough, then it is absolutely NOT raising your electric bill that much. They are only about 5w-25w, and now you want to use a 200w heater as a replacement? That heater will be 10-40x more costly to run. (But it will get your heat up better!)

You need a better incubation chamber. It should be totally sealed, and made from something with insulation. Styrofoam, wood, thick plastic. Do not use metal or glass for an incubation chamber, they are not insulators, they transfer heat out of your area, into your house.

You can also try putting your incubation higher in your house. Your floor is about 55-65F, waist level is about 65-75F, cieling temps are about 75-85F. First try raising your incubation chamber. The heat pad you have in there can only raise them temps about 15F, in a well insulated box. EG, if your house is 55F, your heater can only raise that to 70F, your house would need to be 70F to raise it to 85F.

yah I just am getting a 250 watt one because it has a external senor for heating, vs the 100w has senor on the unit :frown:. Lol same prices though.
