Pedro outside but temps are getting low at night.
    #3766471 - 02/11/05 02:05 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Recently i moved my pedro outside.

The highs are in the 60's and lows in the 36-40 degree range.

Lots of rain has come, and recently a freeze.
My cactus was frozen, and is thawing out.. kind of mushy at the top.. will I lose him? this is the only time its been frozen.

What should I do to keep it healthy? Cover it with something?

Unless you are expecting another freeze or significant drop in temperatures, I wouldnt cover it with anything. If you are, a light blanket may help.
I highly doubt you will lose it, but if the worst did happen, you could chop it and the roots would definately still support new growth.

make a small portable cover with PVC and sheet plastic, I recently froze mine and
they seem to be recovering pretty well.

You should really wait for the last frost in your area, or take them in at night. A PVC greenhouse isnt a bad idea, but today in NY its windy as hell! A fallen pedro would really suck so make sure you secure the structure well to the ground or your house. A small electic space heater could be used on a chilly night to keep above freezing.

I reccomend to many to invest in some burlap bags for anything you have outside and are paranoid about freezing.

:update: well I checked today and the top part of the cactus is brownish and kinda squishy.

Should I cut the brown squishy part off or wait and see what happens?

we have had a LOT of rain here recently, so maybe that attributes to the softness of the cactus.

I would cut the squishy part off. Pedros can take down to 26 if it's only for a couple hours. Any long period below 32 will freeze them.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

If it is planted in an area with plenty of rainfall a straight across cut can cause pockets in the callous that fill up with water which can lead to stem rot.

However if the uppermost areoles are at an equally balanced height it is possible that you will get 3 or more pups with a straght cut as apposed to 2 or 1 if you put a higher edge in.

They can tolerate lower than 26 if only for a couple hours. I've had mine survive down to 17 with no damage when I lived in the desert, the low humidity may have helped. Here its a bit wetter but they get frost almost every morning for a couple months and do fine with seasonal lows 22-25. Certainly though if the tissue becomes frozen you'll want to cut that off. Mushy/ squishy doesn't sound good. You'll need to cut that back a bit to where you can see healthy tissue.

it was sad... but i cut a nice portion off of the top just to be safe.

i figure with summer around the corner and being planted in the ground i should have it back in no time.
