dj trick

are we all familiar with the song "midnight in a perfect world" from dj shadow's "endtroducing"? you know at the end, he has that sample of a guy saying "Now approaching midnight!" or similar, and he's playing it over and over, starting it before it can finish, "Now-n-n-now app-now-n-n-n-now approaching-now approaching-now approaching mid-now-n-n-now " et cetera.

how's he do that? to me it sounds like he's twisting a dial, or else he's just hitting a key that starts he sample playing, but it seems too fast for that.

that is very precise, it's probably sequenced MIDI.

never heard the song, but its probably one of two things...like the above said, simply precise midi sequencing, or it could just be a retrigger setting on a sampler.

although since i've never heard it, it's possible that it's particle/granular synthesis which is extremely complex... basically breaks a sample into thousands of bits and lets you replay them anyway you can imagine...you can do similiar things as what's described LIVE with a granular sythesizer, without complex midi sequencing.

Some higher end Pioneer mixers have a button that you can push and then adjust different dials to achive the effect you want. I've never heard the track though, so I can't tell you if that's what it is.

I'm honestly suprised by how many of you have not heard the track. give it a listen. the whole album is pretty sublime, in my opinion.

Shadow Rules.

So does granular synthesis.

He probably just fucked with it on a computer.. repearing the first fraction of a second of that sample over and over again...

BTW... I opened up my shroomery radio show last week with that track

I'll be playing some more shadow tonight....

granular synthesis is a form of synthesis where you take a sample, and break it into thousands of individual pieces, or 'particles'... then you can replay these particles back in almost any way you can imagine... you really have to sit down and play with it to get a feel for what it's really capable of. you can time stretch things, pitch shift, do ping-pong effects, there's tons of things you can do with it when you get a feel for it, and you can do it all real-time.

...
he produced that entire album on an MPC2000XL. All you have to do is load the vocal samples into the trigger pads on the MPC and hit them as you wish. I am positive this is how he did this.

Yea.. most ppl with the word "DJ" in their name that produce albums, don't to their effects on the fly with vinyl... they use some kinda synthesizer (keyboard, hardware or software)...

although DJ Shadow is pretty badass... he's quite the turntablist... not as good as Qbert/Mixmaster Mike... but he's definately got skills

yeah, is there a certain amount of samples directly from vinyl you must use in your album before you can call yourself DJ whatever?

Lackobreath is probably right. It does sound like granular synth. work. You obviously like good music, but do you write music too? I ask so I can give you an example. There's a pretty decent sequencing program called 'Fruity Loops.' Fruity Loops has a built in granular synth. You should check it out.

when did they put the granular synth in fruity loops? that was the prog i used when i first started making tunes, way back. then i switched to a prog called buzz that was way more interesting. maybe i should go back and have another look at the fruity loops.

Hmmm....I dunno. It's been quite awhile. FL has come a looong way since their 2.X versions. I started using Buzz too, but then FL got their heads out of their arses and started incorporating more external editors/VSTs/synth-drum machines etc. You should give it a try again. I feel it's much more productive than Buzz now.
