"windows is shutting down"
    #3765029 - 02/11/05 03:07 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

so what takes my computer so long to 'shut down'? what is occupying its time while it displays that message for me? what does 'shutting down' actually entail? why's it take like 50 seconds?

It's closing programs which run in the background.

Next time post your Windows Version, that way I might be able to give more info.  :smirk:

It's also unmounting drives and various other things... I know people bitch at me for bringing it up all the time, but if you would like an operating system that doesn't hide things like this from you and lets you know what is going on, I suggest you try *n?x, which on shutdown generally displays an informative message each step of the way.

Well it can mean multiple things.

- You might have too much stuff running.
- You might need to clean out your registry.
- You might have to tweak it to increase speed. (The most likely thing)
- You might need a faster CPU/Memory card
- You might have a virus or spyware (probably not the case)

Recommendations:

Run XP-Antispy
Use the services fix from http://www.blackviper.com/
Change the windows setting under performance to speed instead of beauty.
Run MSCONFIG and disable unneeded programs like scanners and such (Last tab behind services).

And you will end up with a smooth running system.
