casing question--
    #3762284 - 02/10/05 02:21 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Iv got a couple casing's that have been in the terrarium for maybe a bit more than 2 weeks. A few days ago I noticed first signs of pins, but in each casing, there is only 3 on each, and there right at the edge of the substrate, against the aluminum, plus they are very small. The substrate is also pulling away from the sides, but this is natural right before the fruiting cycle..Is there a chance that more pins will come, or is 3 on each all I should expect? (1 cake per casing)

That depends if there is enough growth poking through in other place. It may only be coming through on the sides because that is the only exposed area as it pulled away from the case. AFOAF just had a case he was about to throw out cause it was getting old and all the shrooms on it were small and few but then he got lazy and left it for a few days and now he has about 2 dozen 6 inch tall shrooms on one casing. Maybe cut back the humidity a lil bit cause i think that is what he and his laziness did.

Your casings are pinning at the sides because that is where the moisture is. It sounds as though the casing is too dry, especially towards the middle. The fact that the casing is already shrinking away from the sides also suggests this. Casing shrinkage is normal during a normal flush because the fruits remove moisture from the casing, but 3 pins should not cause noticable shrinkage.

Re-evaluate your misting and humidification techniques, and read up on pinning strategies. Agar made an excellent post regarding pinning strategies not long ago.

A casing with optimal moisture content will deliver pinsets like this:

Good luck.

Casings require "nearly saturated" conditions prior to pinhead initiation. The existing moisture will then give the developing primordia the proper environment for optimum proliferation to occur. A good read. GL!

Does the mycelium still appear to be bright and fuzzy? It sounds like you might have either a dry casing, or overlay, or both. If you allowed the mycelium to completely colonize the surface before you initiated pinning, that would account for some of your problems
