Damn straight it is the plan. And once it is just Iraqis vs. Iraqis the insurgency will have little appeal both to the main stream press and to the insurgents.
I have a feeling that Iraq is going to weather the storm.

Heh, you really think so?
I don't:
- The US military is going to keep forces over there, even if they're not the ones assigned to peacekeeping.
- The insurgents will be damn aware they're fighting American puppets, the closest thing there is to American troops. Most probably they intend to fight until the last American leaves Iraqi soil.
- The average Iraqi puppet is not prepared to die to stop the insurgents, while the average insurgent is dying to die for his holy cause.
I think in this respect, the comparison with Vietnam applies in many aspects. Motivation is key.

Americans actually believed they would be greeted as liberators when they marched into Iraq - what were they thinking?
the US government (and a few credulous people who believed them) thought we'd be welcomed as liberators. America, and the American people as a whole, never believed this fantasy. give us some credit.

Iraq has been conquered literally dozens of times in its long history. we're just the latest in a long list of invaders. iraq is probably the most frequently conquered place on earth. the idea that the Iraqis would welcome ANY invader is just proposterous and demonstrates complete ignorance or misunderstanding of Iraqi history and the Iraqi people.
