That applies to the Doors, but NOT to the Beatles... wonder why that is???

I hope that's not an argument for the Beatles being good - because that's still opinion. I've loved Cat Steven's music since I was a child, doesn't mean anything other than that music has endured for me.

I'm getting out of this conversation now - y'see I love The Doors - our opinions are too different - stalemate!

Yes, your next mission it to aquire live albums! You should also try really really really really hard to see them live, anywhere! I personally recommend red rocks in colorado. I don't know where you are from, but I'd personally escort you there, or meet you there, because you need to see them live to really appreciate what they do! The Dead are not just a group, but a way of life  :gd_icon:

... and this is coming from a Phishhead! I love Phish, and although they are similar, they have a different beat to them. And you must admit, the Dead were before Phish, and the Dead continue after Phish... now who is the better band?

(don't get me wrong! I  phish... but honestly  )

Actually, I love being challenged.

I'll admit to being strongly opinionated, especially when it comes to music.

Just look at my title.

See, you guys have to understand that I'm a 45 year old guy who's enjoyed
nothing but rock music since age 5 and I was there when all of it started.

Save for a few of us (old fogies), most of you (young whippersnappers) look
upon all music from before your time as being equally new to you.

There's a huge difference in the way we hear it, having heard it since it came out.

For example; I loved the Doors in the late 60's to early 70's, now I HATE them.

Young people are just discovering the old stuff and experiencing it anew,
therefore, the music is fresh and attractive, whereas I've heard it enough
already. It was overplayed and now I'm sick of it.

That applies to the Doors, but NOT to the Beatles... wonder why that is???

Finally, as I said earlier in this thread, the Dead are okay in my book...
Just okay.  I wish I was more into the scene and the whole society of the
Greatful Dead culture, but just was never there and now I can't go back.

Oh well.

Wonderfully stated and exactly what I was thinking as I read through these replies. However, me being only a young 26yr old whippersnapper, this was only conjecture. Glad to see it was founded in truth and spoken by someone who has lived through the music.

Music is a very personal thing to many people. It is also highly subjective depending on the observer. One might hold, for example, The Dead in high regard for one reason while someone else may hate them for this very same thing. And not just for who they are but for the music itself and the way it sounds to that ear at that particular moment in time.

It's like asking someone what their favorite color is. There's no definitive answer to the question "What's the best color ever?". And so the same goes for "Best band ever". As we live, experience, learn, and grow our tastes inevitably change. The fact that you have always enjoyed The Beatles and in your mind they have stood the test of time, the same may not go for all old codgers like yourself. It doesn't mean a damn thing really. Doesn't hold water.

I do share many of your opinions. I do believe it really is all about the music. It's a large part of my life. And, I couldn't agree more with your statement, in a previous post, about Rush. Definitely some fine grooves to trip to there, my friend. Wow, did I just write all that? What the hell was I thinking? Master of the obvious, eh? Anyhow, in summation (is that a word?) Rock on to whatever it is that moves you.

Hey, just point me to some dates and locales and I'll be there this summer. I'm from Virginia but it doesn't really matter. I'm taking this summer off to travel and I plan to see them if it's at all possible. I think I saw in a post a bit ago that they don't have any dates out yet for this summer. I've already decided that it's an absolute MUST that I attend at the very least one live event. I just gotta.

I'm so glad you appreciate RUSH.

It's not that it took me a long time really. It's just that I've never really been exposed to them. I'd heard "Casey Jones" before of course but didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to it, y'know. So I was on my way home yesterday and thinking about all this talk about "The Dead" here in the pub so I wheeled into the music store and had a look around. Of course there were lots of albums to choose from. I chose this one because I figured it would give me an accurate "feel" for this band as it encompasses songs from thier entire career. I popped it into the CD player to give it a listen as I drove home and was hooked before I pulled into the driveway.

THIS  is where you want to be! I don't think it's possible for a band to sound bad here, a venue created in the mountains by God Himself! He loves it when we enjoy good music  You should go there to see any band that slightly interests you, and you'll never regret it. Seeing the Dead there is one amazing experience! I'd recommend going to Colorado in some warmer months though, or bundle up for the cold mountain winds! Red Rocks is just a big party on top of a mountain, I've see The Dead and Yes there, and both experiences are some of the best in my life! You must go, and if you drive through the Midwest, give me a ring

Travel well and be safe!

As we rode out to fennario, as we rode on to Fennario
Our captain fell in love with a lady like a dove
And called her by a name, pretty Peggy-O.

Will you marry me pretty Peggy-O, will you marry me pretty Peggy-O
If you will marry me, I'll set your cities free
And free all the ladies in the are_-O.

I would marry you sweet William-O, I would marry you sweet William-O
I would marry you but your guineas are too few
And I fear my mama would be angry-O.

What would your mama think pretty Peggy-O,
What would your mama think pretty Peggy-O,
What would your mama think if she heard my guineas clink
Saw me marching at the head of my soldiers.

If ever I return pretty Peggy-O, if ever I return pretty Peggy-O
If ever I return your cities I will burn
Destroy all the ladies in the area-O.

Come steppin' down the stairs pretty Peggy-O,
Come steppin' down the stairs pretty Peggy-O,
Come steppin' down the stairs combin' back your yellow hair
Bid a last farewell to your William-O.

Sweet William he is dead pretty peggy-O, sweet William he is dead pretty Peggy-O,
Sweet William he is dead and he died for a maid
And he's buried in the Louisiana country-O.

As we rode out to fennario, as we rode out to Fennario
Our captain fell in love with a lady like a dove,
And called her by a name, pretty Peggy-O.
