3 Weeks, B+ ... still not colonized
    #3757076 - 02/09/05 04:36 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

It's been 3 weeks now since I planted my jars, and while there has been progress its extremely minimal.

Crappy pictures:

Mycelium is definetly visible ... and there are enough spores in each can - I even tried putting it right under a humidifier but no dice, the jars just wont colonize fully.

tips?

Oh, and hi, Im fospher of Rivend.com ... I make animations - see footer.

you dont understand yet, go back and reread the pf tek, why are you using a humidifier for colonizing? its all about the temp, get you rjars around 84-86F. and storing in cardboard isnt smart cause it wont help block contams and may even have contams hiding in it. so like i said above go read again untill you understand everything in and out and you will succeed very easily.

yes..re-read the pftek stuff. One major slow down colonizer mistake people do with pftek are: packing in the mixture(just drop it in) and make sure your jars stay at the correct temp. Also that jar with the lid off is a goner. Once your sterilize your jars you cannot open them till they are fully colonized

i cant tell if thats duct tape covering your holes or not but if so maby you should try to find medical tape it allows more gas exchange

What did I do wrong then that was different than the pf tek then?

Here's my direct procedure:

Jars were store bought canning jars(clean)
Mixed vermic, brown rice, water and distributed amongst jars
Sterilized for 1.5 hours with pot and lid hence an absence of a pressure cooker
Sterilized needle, put in roughly 1ml in each jar
duct taped the holes

Its about 75 degrees in my house, and I dont get what the problem is. Should I put these by a heater? Would I need to make an incubator?

I do in fact know that temperature can dramatically affect mycellium growth. Like I had B+ colonizing for two weeks in my incubator at about that temperature and there were only like a few quarter sized spots visible. I say try and build and incubator or if anything, move them to a warmer spot .

You need to build an incubator.
Your temps are too low..that is why its taking so long for the jars to colonize.

The 3rd picture shows some dark colors on the top...but the picture quality is terrible.
Looks like the jar was contaminated...was that green or black on top?

Don't open your jars until they are fully colonized...all white.

Good luck!~

Is there any gas exchange? Are the jars completly sealed with duct tape? They shouldnt be. Either make on big hole in the lid and fill with poly-fil or make four small holes just big enough for the needle and leave them open.

So I shouldnt seal the holes with duct tape? Wouldnt a punctured jar allow for more contams? Or will a slight lack of oxygen not allow colonization?

I've heard that b+ does fine in the 70's ... +10 degrees?
