Does anyone know where to get these buggers? What would be a good alternative.

Wheat bran is a good alternative. You can get it at health food stores

Anno..

Have you used cottonseed hulls. I imagine they are for more than structure since they are added to straw. I know meal is used for nitrogen. same as the hulls? would it be just as good to use rice bran?

Yea, the hulls are more for structure in compost and for growing oysters, very low in nitrogen, high in carbon. Cottonseed meal is very high in nitrogen, in fact too high for substrates unless it's just a small amount for supplimentation, I have had no luck finding hulls locally, can get 50lb bags of wheat bran, cottonseed meal, soybean meal etc, for $4-$6 at feed stores, but none of them stock the hulls that I have found.
