Poor Man's Pod?
    #3752999 - 02/08/05 09:04 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Can I use perlite instead of the clay pellets it recommends?

yes. but perlite can get messy. try to get chunked lava rock if you can. most home improvement stores sell it in 40-50lbs bags. I hear it works just as well and is much easier to clean than perlite which gets sticky and annoying.

I have a bag of hydroton, would a 10L bag fill the bottom of a 66 q. steralite container and still have some left over?

Yes, hydroton is the same thing as geolite. The main purpose of using geolite/hydroton/lava rock is that it creates a capillary action that pulls water to the surface to moisturize the cakes. Perlite doesn't do that.

So I should use the "Red Lava Rock" available at Lowes in my Poor man Pods set-up?

I would like to keep my hydroton for my hydroponic plants, as that stuff is expensive to ship.

yeah, the lava rock is fine in a PMP, when you decide to order more hydroton,
call a few concrete contractors and ask if they'll sell you the LECA or as the
call it around here, expanded clay agregate.

Lava rock will work, but the problem with it is that it ways more than geolite or hydroton. Check the yellow pages for garden centers. Call and ask if they have geolite or hydroton. If you live in or near a decent sized city (250,000+) you will find one that carries it. You can also call florists, they may keep some in stock for themselves and sale you some.

Should I crush the red Lava ROck or leave it as it is?

I would say it depends on how big and how easy it is to crush. Smaller pellets would probably work better, but I don't think they are required.

the red lava rock should be in "nice sized" chunks. between the size of a fun sized snickers and a small marble. not big like an orange and not small orange seeds.

you need more than 10L to fill the bottom of a 66qt sterilite with 4 inches

I often wonder about the hours when a man sits alone, watching the smoke of a cigarette, thinking. I wonder what great things have come alive from such hours. When a man thinks, there is a spot of fire alive in his mind---and it is proper that he should have the burning point of a cigarette as his one expression."

Just rinse it with water and put some H202 in when it comes time to ad water to the PMP.

How much should I yield altogether (dry weight) with 6 cakes, so far all are colonizing perfectly, brilliantly white mycelium. And fruiting in a PMP. These are B+ strain from T.H.E.

Some time ago, S. had 6 (1/2 pint) cakes of B+ in a modified PMP. Total dry yield during the course of three flushes was 1.7 ounces. The pinsets were not ideal, for the most part, so if you get good pinsets, you should expect to harvest a bit more than that - barring unforeseen circumstances.
