are better days are coming soon?
    #3749011 - 02/07/05 11:59 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Lately I have been really pissed off and disguested with the apparent rise of conservatism.  I have been thinking about the last time America went this far to the right and I think the best comparison would have to be the 50's.

I've given this alot of thought and there are numerous parallels to the 50's happenning right now.  We were at war, the afformentioned rise of extremely conservative "values", it was full of intolerence and downright hatred to varius minoritys, and it was a time when these coservatives considered themselves extremely patriotic and everyone else was not.  But most importantly the first hippys appeared.  They didnt have a name then, but the first hippys arrived in the 50s, and later, in the 60's their number exploded.

Now im not saying that the 60s are going to come back, I dont think that will ever happen again, but I DO think that the same formula is at play.  The country moves far to the right then swings back hard to the left.  History repeats itself, everyone knows that.

So cheer up the 2010's might just be a really groovy time, and if it is then you can count yourself as one of forerunners, just like the hippys from the 50's.  :peace:PEACE:peace:

I've thought of that as well... I've come to the conclusion that it's only going to get worse though (getting more and more restrictive as each day passes). It can only get so bad before it gets better though *shrug*.

Let's call the next movement the Roots Movement, and lets all call each other Roots!! Going back to our roots, our true nature, is what we need..

And hey, maybe in the 2010's we will accomplish the revolution that the hippy's only dreamed of.

Rampant extremist liberalism is just as noxious as unchecked conservatism. The middle ground is where sanity is found.

Better days are coming in about four years.

Move to Canada.

In the middle between big-government socialists and militaristic religious nutballs? No thanks. I think I'd rather just find my own direction. I choose the libertarian path.

Regarding the topic: regardless of your political views, the general trend is for the politics of a country to swing from one end of the political spectrum to the other. We're seeing it in full right swing, and eventually, it will swing the other way(I'm not particularly thrilled about the prospect of all the social programs that will come about from that).

I am a US citizen and I enjoy my status as such. I remember during the Clinton administration being just as fed up with the liberal bullshit running amok as I am with this fundamental right wing conservatism we see now. As for better days? I enjoy living in this day and time. Canada is no better a place to live than the US.

Odd, what makes you think a forum full of shroomers want sanity?

I wasnt speaking so much about the government when i said it will swing back to the left. I meant the populace, but yes the middle is the best place for the government.

Yeah, unfortuanetly not many people know where the infamous "middle" really is.

40 year cycle? [Re: blaze2]
    #3751072 - 02/08/05 01:19 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

A wave of spirituality exploded in the 20s, then it hit even harder in the 60s, especially the latter half. The wave is building up, and will hopefully it with incredible force this time. Will we brake through or will it roll back?

Hehe... Dig the thought, rooters

We need to keep on dreaming!

I disagree.

Sanity is nowhere to be found anywhere within the matrix of politics. :mushroom2:

Sanity is subjective, it's where you find it.

So... sanity has no place in the art of compromise?

Compromise is not always the sane thing to do.  When you are faced between good and evil, you do not compromise between the two.  You choose good.

Obviously politics is foreign territory for you.  Things are not always black and white (unless you believe the current president).

For example:

A mother is holding onto the hands of her two toddlers as they walk through Times Square.  She trips and her two toddlers go scurrying off into traffic... assuming she can only save one, which one does she save?  Either way she's favoring one over the other.

A politician has to decide what's more important... supplying cancer patients with expensive drugs that they could not otherwise afford OR supplying malaria vaccines to African tribespeople.  Is it a game of numbers - the more people he saves, the better?  Or is it more about saving his fellow citizens?

Okay... I hurt your feelings... sorry... moving on...

This is a very simplified view of things. Too simplified.

Politics is how you deal with the gray area. It is not inherently good or bad. And sometimes the choices are mixed (see my examples).
