outta 10 jars, one was contam.ed, altho had no visible sign, it didn't colonize, and smelled bad if lid taken off. all others were fine, didn't take that many precautions, just basic ones.

terraium, handled cakes with dirty hands (hands get dirty getting to terraium (no choice in it ) all cakes doing fine and pinning ok. When fan terraium, dust and dirt get into terraium, no probs seeable in it.


so from this (admittable first grow) contams been no prob, perhaps in slowing down process, but in stopping it no.

have i got lucky, aor are contams blown outta proportion?

The utmost contamination problems arise from improper sterilisation of the substrate. Speak, if you manage to sterilize the jars properly(cooking for a prolonged time, pressure cooking), and if you use a syringe to innoculate, chances are good that you will suceed.

Contaminations are easy to avoid if you take the necessary precautions. What happens often is that a newbie will be very careful, and not get many contaminated jars (if any). Then on their future grows, they take less precautions, and get careless. Sooner or later they get a lot of contamed jars.

Like I said, contams are pretty easy to avoid. Just remember though that a contam is a big problem, and always make sure that you are taking precaustions as to make sure that you don't get any.
