Fast Growth on Pf Cakes
    #3749276 - 02/08/05 03:03 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I am experiencing something wonderful, I have 12 1/2 pint jars 6 of which were inoculated on 2/4 with Zstrain and 6 on 2/6 with PES Hawaii all of which are about 75% colonized (even the ones knocked up about 36 hours ago). I did this using liquid inoculation from a malt extract solution inoculation by dropping some colonized cake in the jar and shaking the fuck out of it. Can someone tell me if this is really abnormal or what?

I am not an experienced grower but I can tell you that using mycelium culture instead of using spores to innoc it will reduce the colonization time by 3-4 days. Once innoced with spores the spores have to germinate before they beging growing into myc. If you use mycelium culture you should see growth within 12-24 hours I do believe. So 3 days for partial colonization is fast, but not abnormally fast.

See you were sposed to say holy F*^k thats fast to boost my confidence, but I guess just fast is good enough. Seriously though, That was the first time I had done liquid innoc. so I really had nothing to compare that to but I know it was a helluva lot faster than spore syringes. And in case anyone was wondering, 2 1/2 pint cakes can make around 40 pint jars of liquid brew, I had nothing better to do and lots of empty jars.

Z-Strain is also a fast colonizing strain. Good job tho!

LMAO if you use all of those before they go bad you will have a SOOOOOO many shrooms. They should be good for 2-3 months in the fridge. Once mycelium is growing put them in a dark part of the fridge, or basement/garage this time of year.

there is no possible way that the jar would be 75% colonized after 2 days. i have used a liquid based mycelium culture with both those strains and i have not had results like that. i have seen growth in 36 hours but the jars would still take a couple weeks to colonize that far. i just wish it was that fast...

I realize the middle of the cake isnt colonized much, but the outsides are almost covered going on 4 days and almost 2 days. I have them incubating at appx. 85 degrees with about a 70-75% moisture content. The only thing I did different than most teks suggest when innoculating with live mycelium is that i used about 8-9cc per jar, and as prescribed, injected at 4 points on each jar, seeing as I am overloaded with the shit right now and all my liquid brews are now loaded with mycelium, i figured it couldn't hurt to spare a little more.

8-9 cc per half pint is WAY too much. You're opening the floodgates to contams by putting too much moisture in your jars. Maybe your growth is myc, maybe its cobweb. You'll find out soon enough. Post some pics so we can get a better idea of whether its contams or myc.

I dont have a digi cam but its definitely rhizomorphic growth. The Z-strain seems to have more ropey growth than the PESA, but so far no signs of contams that I am aware of. Hopefully I can get ahold of my friend for his cam and I'll try and add some pics tonight or tomorrow sometime. And if they do contaminate, oh well... i have 3 trays of Pa. Cyans goin in the chamber either tomorrow or Thursday so they will be plenty of consolation

Never mind my last comment. If you say its rhizo growth, that cant be mistaken for cobweb...75% colonization after 2 days? Thats the fastest I've ever heard

I wish I knew what specific factor(s) caused it. My guess is just that I knocked em up with tons of live mycelium and Ive got a pretty clean setup, I'm kinda anal when it comes to sterility. I guess Im gonna try and recreate everything I did. Use a control batch inoculated with 2cc of mycelium and a test with 8cc all incubated side by side at 85deg with a 75% moisture content. Being a chem major little shit like that bugs me and ill be damned if I cant find out what happened. However, I think I'll prepare a new malt mycelium jar(which is the same medium I used originally) but I'm gonna slice a nice little rhizomorphic section off one of the new cakes into the jar due to its proven acclimation to malt and pf formula cakes.
