    #3748902 - 02/08/05 01:41 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

i have a straw based bag with a big ball of colonized myc in it about the size of a pool ball, and another small one the size of maybe a golf ball. my question is should i just leave it alone or should i break it up and mix it all around in the bag? or will this just kill it off. It my first myc ever so i don't want to take any chances with it............. :shroomer:

You most definitely want to break it up as much as possible. The idea is to create as many inoculation points as you can within the straw, cutting down on your spawn run time.

Break that puppy up!

Hmm I dont know about that...it should ahve been mixed up to begin with but straw should be COMPACTED as possible when your trying to colonize it..if you try and mix it up it might not turn out so hot. Depends I guess on how finly the straw is cut/chopped (if at all). Also bags moving around to much could crack or break (depending on the bag type and how well and long PC'ed, if reused ect) or pull in contams if not sealed well. Trying to mix up straw would take alot of mixing if its all compacted like it should be, especially if long peices all tied up.

If its been a small amount of time since you inoculated the bag, I would wait it out and just try and keep the bag compressed. Even if you do try and mix it up, compress it after.
