Spaceghost has found what appear to be the button stage of Laetiporus sulphureus, the "sulfur shelf" or "chicken of the woods." These are a decent edible when young & soft, best simmered in a cream sauce then baked in a casserole with noodles. Quite sour when raw (packed with Vitamin C!), taste mellows with cooking. Texture (but not flavor) of chicken.
GG's look like some species of Ganoderma, a genus of woody "conks" which includes the Reishi or Ling Chih prized in Oriental medicine for its immune-system strengthening properties. Not "edible" (would be like gnawing on particle board) but can be dried, powdered, & soaked in wine to produce an elixir with proven anti-viral and anti-cancer effects.
