Why patchouli?
    #3746028 - 02/07/05 03:18 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not making fun of anyone, or mocking hippies in any way. This is a serious question.

What's going on with this patchouli business?

I have the following theories as to why you hippies love the stuff:

1. It's some kind of tradition, and hippies feel that smelling of patchouli is mandatory.

2. It's some kind of hippy "pheromone" that alerts other hippies of your presence, and possibly attracts more.

3. Maybe hippies think that it successfully masks the weed smell. I think that is highly debatable.

4. Hippies just like the smell.

If the last theory is true, then one must pose the question:
Why don't many non-hippies not wear patchouli?

So, in short, I just wanna know why all you hippies love that scent so much. Thanks.

hippies hang around hippies, and there is patchouli where hippies are, so they go "eh what the hell?"

I really dislike the smell, but that may be because I kind of relate the scent to the body odor that is often accompanied by it.

I just don't think it's all that pleasant. It must be the tradition thing.

Hey Electrode. How are things?

I used to wear patchouli but, it is too overwhelming. I wear sandalwood if I wear any kind of oil. It is nice. :crazy2:

Well, if you don't bathe, you need some sort of strong scent to cover up the body odor, and I guess patchouli has a strong enough smell to get that job done.

What about hippies that DO bathe? Some MUST exist. Why would they wear it then?

I think they must like it. Plus, not all hippies wear patchouli and the ones that do usually wear it to cover their body odor. :rasta:

That's the thing--not all hippies wear patchouli. The ones that do usually don't bathe.

i wouldn't comsider myself a "traditional hippie" but i cannot stand the smell of coglone [sp] or perfume on a person. the human body has the most beautiful smells but that for veggieheads and vegans i can tell the difference between somewho who eats a lot of meat. that can be a bad smell.

i ocassionally burn patchouli incense...don't wear any kind of oil though. and i do bathe, every day if possible :smirk: as far as why it's so popular, i really have no idea. smells good to me though, as long as there are no undertones of horrible b.o. that gets to me as well. as many times as i've been called one of these you refer to as "hippies", i can't stand smelling bad...i shower, and wear the scent of fresh mountain air, and ocassionally pot smoke, very proudly

Can you be hippie if you take showers? I thought not taking showers was part of the tradition as well.

Hell yeah. Really, there aren't Hippies anymore. Just b/c people share the values and ideals of the hippies, it doesn't make them one.

The whole generalization thing is lame.

I think it's more of a tradition. In countries where they don't shower as much, the richer people use oils to mask the smell, and some even consider themselves 'clean' when they have had an oil bath! Crazy people...

I shower, and I like the smell of patchouli, but I don't wear it. I like it when you get patchouli-scented soaps, but that is mild and not over powering. I wish more hippies smelled like nag champa or superhit!
