Oh man this is open ended so I'll just spew out names till I get tired
Sound Tribe Sector 9 (earthy jazzy stuff)
The Bad Plus (experimental jazzy piano/stutter drums/upright bass)
The Cinematic Orchestra (descriptive name)
Tortoise (schitzophernic jazzy, hits you somewhere deep)
The Coma Lilies (intense psychedelic rock, reminiscent of floyd)
Prefuse73 (stuttered electro-cello hip-hop)
The Gotan Project (eastern-flavored jazzy accordionish)
Django Reinhardt (classic guitarist from the 20s-30s, a true pioneer (he only had two fingers on his strumming hand))
Blockhead (funky instrumental hip-hop)
Diplo (genre-jumping instrumentalyst, hip-hoppish)
Daedelus! (dreamy dreamy synthy happy)
Amon Tobin (electro-jazzy schitzo)
Boom Bip (chillin downtempo instrumental hip-hop)
Dose One (schitzophernic lyricist beyond comprehension)
AmmonContact (jazzy electronic music)

okay all of those descriptions fall incredibly short of really describing much anything about their music, but that's what happens when you try to verbalize emotion. hope you find some new stuff

dude, I thought it was his fretting hand... but then, that makes almost no sense. but that's what I believed up til right now.

edit: Oh my God:

"Django was bedridden for eighteen months [after a crazy fire]. During this time he was given a guitar, and with great determination Django created a whole new fingering system built around the two fingers on his left hand that had full mobility. His fourth and fifth digits of the left hand were permanently curled towards the palm due to the tendons shrinking from the heat of the fire. He could use them on the first two strings of the guitar for chords and octaves but complete extension of these fingers was impossible. His soloing was all done with the index and middle fingers! Film clips of Django show his technique to be graceful and precise, almost defying belief."

thought so! from http://www.redhotjazz.com/django.html . unbelievable.

wow. I noticed a couple people in a row that have some similar taste in music to myself.

check these out (some have already been mentioned, with good reason):

Frank Zappa
Anything Mike Patton-related (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, etc)
Master's Hammer
Nile
Neurosis
Swans
Jarboe
Behemoth (the Polish band, not any of the 255000 others)
Carcass
Death
Buckethead

uh.. I think that's enough suggestions for now. I could go on and on..

Shpongle. There's no substitute for better shrooming music. Besides that in the electronica, try Hallucinogen, Infected Mushroom, Aphex Twin.

In the blues/psychedelic rock side, the Doors, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane and any Clapton band (Cream, Yardbirds, you name it)

I like to listen to metal when Im sober or twisted as well ... I dont know - name a genre I'll give you 10,000 good bands. Except rap & country.

Add to your list, not already mentioned:

Squarepusher, Ultravisitor
#1 musical genious of all time. This work is flawless. You know when a song peaks, this is like 79 minutes of just climax. Ultravisitor is to most music what tantric sex is to masturbation.

Aesop Rock, Labor Days
Aesop Rock is to rap what Galileo was to astrology. I don't think the music is always the best, but this guy is an amazing poet with something to say.

Skinny Puppy, Process
I dunno how to describe it. It's electronic/industrial anti-pop that is good. Original sounding music.

Download, Effector
Excellent album for tripping too. Electronic, less aggressive then Skinny Puppy, these bands are related, and both deserve to be checked out.

Meshuggah, I
Meshuggah is a band of 5 psychonauts that are all absolutely insane with their rythmic complexity.

Porcupine Tree, In absentia
Psychedelic prog rock done very well.

The best way to find good music is to look at a genre, like metal or hip hop, and then look for the guys who did a bunch of acid but use drugs intellegently. These guys are always the ones who tear shit up, and I think they have more in common with each other then they do with most of the people in their genres.

I've always liked Portishead, Tricky, and Massive Attack. They seem under-represented here.

It's triphop, if you've never head of any of them.
