grain drying out before it coloizes the casing layer

If you were using wild bird seed soaked for 24 hours, then simmered for 30 minutes, followed by pc'ing at 15psi for 1 hour what would cause it to dry out before it colozises the casing layer?
Its a straight verm casing layer, the moisture content is good.
Could the tub in tub be too warm? It incubates jars just fine...hrmm.

WBS substrate alone will not give you good crop returns.
Better as spawn, into pasturized h/poo, or compost.
Straight verm is also a rather poor casing (alone).
Sounds like your ambiant RH is very low, which leads to substrate drying out.

If you're doing a casing and your substrate is exposed than like stated above you need to have your humidity upwards of 100% Are you doing this?

The colonized birdseed was put into gladlock tupperware containers cased with moist verm, then the tops were put on with 4 small holes poked in the top.

I've used the same setup with gladware and stragiht verm but with no holes and it worked allright. Not great but it didn't dry out. No wait a minute. I used verm/peat moss mix.

Ive never had a problem casing straight birdseed. Agars just a firm believer in the power of bulk. Birdseed should work without a problem though, this isnt your problem. I've had nothing but problems with straight verm compared to verm/coir casing. Verm/peat moss works better they say but I have YET to try it..soon though.

Try mixing your colonized WBS with some damp verm before you case it. This will provide a larger water reserve.

LOL.... Scat is right on about my preferance. IMHO,WBS as a substrate will fruit. But, usualy a lot of small shrooms & not much of a second flush, as it doesnt rehydrate well. Verm helps. Even more if soaked in poo tea.

Funny you say to mix it with verm....earlier today the containers were opened and I mixed up the verm casing layer and the birdseed, just to see if it will recover or not.
I'll try a verm/coir casing layer next time.
Will birdseed produce similiar results to the pftek?

Better then the PF Tek. I've never used STRAIGHT birdseed...always been mixed with at least verm but I never had a problem with 3 flushes off of them...not quite as good as rye but they werent bad. I only tried out 2 WBS casings like that, just use rye/wbs/verm for now. Trying some rye grass too this time. Why not

I mix it before...while I'm straining it I add dry verm to help soak up excess moisture of rye/wbs. You can mix it after if you want though.
