Just regular tan scotch tape works fine.

I would recommend polyfill or filter discs.
Birdseed and almost any grain produce lots of O2. And if there's no filter on your lid. Well, your birdseed will still colonize but if it stalls, that means that the O2 build up is greater than the oxygen needed for the mycelium to grow.
So, you can do either, but if you use some type of filter you'll get a fully colonized jar in under 10 days as compared to jars with no gas exchange in about a month:)

a simple way to get rid of Co2 is to take the tape off the holes!!!! if you are using quart jars i dont know if this "method" will work, but it worked for me on 1/2 pints. colonized in 13 days i think?
how do you expect people to watch the brady bunch without any lsd?
