I picked my first flush and damn are they better then store bought. hers my problem, the casing is all fucked up from the picking. THe straw isnt that strong and comes up with the casing and ports. Is the normal and is there a way around it.
Im not going to cut them because that will just lead to rotting ports and contams

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I have not had any problems with cutting at the bases of the stem. I just cut them as close to the substrate as possible and I haven't experienced any rotting. There are probably other factors to consider when thinking about rotting, such as moisture.
