you need to run an ftp server try bulletproof or serv-u both are pretty good if u need them ask and i can get them for u. also if u have a dynamic ip address you will need something to keep track of it. search for dynamic ip and see what comes up i use http://www.thatip.com/. also make sure that ur isp provider allows u to run a server i got shut down because mine didn't approve

If you plan on using windows, you can set up apache webserver to host http, bulletproof (BP, more of a 'user interface' as compared to apache) for ftp, or you could just share the computer on a virtual private network, which may be easier than all of the above. It all depends on what you want to be able to do with the server.

I kind of just want it as a side project to try different things with. I'd like a solution to running it on windows, but I'm not familiar with linux..
Basically I just want somewhere to store my files. I don't like loading up my laptop with mp3's and the such. But I want to be able to access them over the web. I'll look into BP and apache.

I say don't worry about Apache. All you need is a FTP server running on the box you want to serve files from and as intrigue said, if you don't have a static IP address you will need something like www.thatip.com or www.no-ip.com i personally use no-ip.com

all these services allow you to have a URL that you can remember easily like http://4-20.hopto.org

Why not try an learn linux? You said this was a side project kinda thing, and that in my opinion is the best way to learn. I got my linux server sitting next to me. It routes my dsl and hosts shit for me, and it was just a side project too. Not to mention linux is free and there are tons different software to put on it for hosting needs. www.freshmeat.net

I use dyndns.org for my dynamic address problems
