Is this a sign to keep misting?
    #374267 - 08/18/01 08:10 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

I have a pinning tray of Mexi-Cubes, spawned from rye grain\perlite, and cased in
sphagnum peat.
The terrarium which they're in is humid enough to get some condensation on the walls, but
the casings still look a little dry, are pulling away from the walls, and have blued very
slightly in 2 spots, which I've heard means they're too dry. I thought they were taking a
while to pin, so I sprayed them with some 1/50 H2o2/Water. The next morning, there were
9 pins. The final count now is at 31, as they've been progressing nicely since then, but was
that a sign to mist them as well, in addition to the wet perlite layer?
I assume the humidity is already above 90%, as theres some pretty heavy condensation on
the walls.

Yes, any time they start to turn blue they are starving for water, or else you have bruised them. The pulling away can be from age, and from dehydration as well. My friend keeps her humidity high always and has very good results .

My friend made this mistake when he first tried his hand at growing God's gifts a few years ago - the mistake of thinking that if you keep the relative humidity high enough in the chamber that you never have to mist, because "it's wet enough in there" - casings still can and do go dry even if the RH is damn high. It's a good idea to keep RH at 90-95% and still spray your casings lightly to moderately at least once a day until they have reached the pinning stage; from pinning to harvesting don't spray; spray fairly heavily, without moving the casing around by the force of the water, after harvesting and keep this cycle going. Casing/substrate pulling away from the sides is a very clearcut sign they need more water directly.
