Wiring of computer fans
    #3741780 - 02/06/05 07:47 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I have these 2 comp case fans that i'm going to hook up to my martha. In addition to the red and black wires, there is a yellow wire. Is this the ground? If i'm hooking it up to a 12V adapter, what do i do with these yellow wires?

Also, If i plan on wiring them in tendem, how should i do it? for ex:

+AC-+fan-+fan-(positive electrode of adapter)?

most likely

yellow=12v
red=5v
black=ground

^ thats how it worked with my PC fans, so I'm guessing it will be the same with yours

So which wire i use is dependant on what kind of power source i use?

So if i get a 12v i should use the yellow and black wires, not using the red at all?

I think the yellow is for the temp sensor. i would ignore it.

And what are your thoughts on integrating a variable resistor to control the speed of the fan?

I figure it would allow me to fine tune the input, thus being more able to maintain env conditions...

Called rheostat sp? many computer places have them for 20 and under you would wire the rheostat then you can put up to 3 or 4 fans on it and it will have knobs to adjust...

The yellow wire is for the speec control of the fan, at least on my box. It sounds like a good idea for the rheostat, but if you're gonna buy an ac adapter instead of cutting up some one you may have laying around, radio shack sells adapters that have a switch to select the voltage output of the unit. That will control the speed of the fan as well.

Quote:

... the voltages on the various wires running to that Molex, they are as follows:
Yellow: +12v
Black: Ground (earth)
Black: Ground (earth)
Red: +5v

Note that there are two black wires, both of them are ground, or earth, wires. My fans have one red wire and one black wire. You might expect that you would connect red to red and black to black right? Wrong, at least in this case it would be wrong. These fans, as are most case fans, designed to run at 12v, so if you connected it in that way, the fan motor would only receive 5 volts and would either run very slowly or more likely not run at all. To connect these fans for 12v operation, you would connect the red wire on the fan to the yellow wire on the Molex and the black to black.

Another option is to hook up the fans using the so-called "7-volt trick" so they run more quietly. This involves connecting the red wire on the fan to the yellow wire (+12v) on the Molex and the black wire to the red wire (+5v). Sounds kinda scary when you first hear of it, like a recipe for acrid blue smoke, but it really isn't. The main thing to remember is that voltage is all about the "difference" across a circuit. In this case the difference is 12v - 5v = 7v. Now some people predict that all sorts of doom and gloom will befall you if you try this, but I've being hooking fans up this way for years and the planet hasn't spun off it's axis yet. If you are really adventurous, you over-volt a 12v fan to 17v...

taken from this website

P.S. I've used the 7 volt wiring technique on my computer which I use for recording music. The fans run slower, but quieter - noise being the reason I did this.

I'm primarily a computer technician, and i can tell ya that ont eh computer's power supply all cords are yellow/black/black/red and they are 12v, ground, ground, 5v. all are in positive DC. some machines replace the yellow with a orange.

however, on your fan with three wires, its not the same!

on a three wire fan, red is voltage in, black is ground, and yellow is speed reporting/control. you wont be able to do anything useful with the yellow, and the red will accept any voltage. 99% of fans are made for 12v, meaning youll get the best performance if you give 12v to the red line, it gets faster and louder with more voltage, but they can burn out and die if you go too high. they get silent and slower with lower voltage, and simply wont turn on below around 5v.

wire them in parallel, connect all the red wires to one another and all the blacks to one another, then over to your power source.
