quick words on incubators

After reading about making your own incubator you probably read the warning of the renowned "water heater from hell". Put simply this devilish heater of water makes contact with a plastic container surface, whereupon the surface begins to melt. Next your mom/landlord/police officer notices a burning plastic smell along with a large pool of water and soon after discovers your stash of mycelium. In short, you?ve just lost your payload. In shorter, game over.

But there is a solution. To safely harness the demonic power of the water heater you must first shackle it. In short, you go to a hardware store, ask for help, get some metallic shackles and/or mentally undress the cashier lady.

What may or may not have occurred to you is the slightly better, or perhaps slightly worse, alternative.

You know that tin foil stuff you used to cover your jars when they were in the pressure cooker? Get a whole bunch of it and cover the water heater (about a quarter inch layer).

Since aluminum is a super good heat conductor it is what we call a "super conductor". That means you?ve thwarted any attempt of plastic melting by that insidious device: the water heater.

umm, plastic is not a super conductor. i dont think it reflects magnetism. furthermore, the heater will simply heat the foil just the same. what one wants to do is get metal clasps, and use that to hold the heater mid water.

not to sound like an ass.

actualy if tis a submersible heater, you want it submerged with at least 1/2 of water covering it, this will keep it from burning through the plastic, you also
need to check on it at least once a week, 2 times a week to be safe

Put some water in the bottom of a paper cup and hold it over a flame. Wont burn a hole in the cup. Just the same, if you keep the tub filled with water, wont burn a hole in the plastic.
