Fist Grow/Birthing
    #3740886 - 02/06/05 01:53 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Hey everybody!
I just have a quick q. This is my first time growing, and I fear I may have hit a roadblock. I inoculated the jars 4 weeks ago, Jan. 8th. The cakes(3 Puerto Rican and 3 Z-strain) are pretty much fully colonized, except for the bottom, and there are no primordia/pins. I've incubated the jars the entire time with a fish tank heater at between 84-88 degrees F. Is it safe to birth the cakes now, or should I keep waiting? Sorry I can't post pics..:(

keep waiting. try flipping your jars over so they are sitting on there lids, give a slight tap on the bottom so the substrate isnt touching the bottom of the jar. this will all allow better air exchange on the bottom and speed up the colonization.

what lemon said BUT if you birth them anyway slice the bottom away with a sharp knife, no uncolonised parts in your cakes when birthing.

When I have a few that are slightly slower I shake the jars up and down to get some air circulation in there. It usually does the trick and never had any problems with contams while doing it.

OK, so I shook the jars a bit and flipped them, but I barely see any growth. Should I keep waiting, or is it ok to birth them? If I birth them, will my yield be lower(theres only like 1/8th inch on the bottom not colonized)? It's my first grow, and I'm getting impatient. Any additional advice would be appreciated. Thanks

PF jars usually take 14-40 days to colonize 100%. Even if you see all white
around the outside, it doesn't mean it's colonized all the way to the center.
I'd birth them 7 days after they turn all white. That will ensure that you're
at least close to 100% and you'll have less waiting time for pins to show.

Also, I recommend a 24 hour cold dunk before birthing.

OK, thanks for the extra input. I was browsing around and found a link in which they describe different strains. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1821796
right now, my cakes look like the mazatapec one, except without the little white bumps(pins?)So, would it be okay to birth?
Thanks again!
P.S. Thanks for putting up with me, I'm still a n00b....
