A tek without verm is needed
    #3740393 - 02/06/05 12:53 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a tek that does not need any vermiculite or perlite. For some reason this stuff is very expensive here.

I've been trying to start my first grow for over 3 months now, but i lack the basic ingredients that are needed. I was tempted to go with bird seeds, but i realized that this would also need some verm at one point...
Soooo, anyhelp is appreciated,
Peace

There really is no replacement for verm. It is what the mycellium will drink from, and from what I've noticed, it's pretty thirsty.
As for perlite (which helps raise humidity in the chamber) Geolite works well too.

Of course there are teks without vermiculite.

You prepare a grain and case it with buffered peat. No vermiculite in here.

aiight..

first off, do go with birdseed or some sort of grain. Spawn your jars to organic composted manure . A big bag of organic composted manure cost me $1.09

You could also just make cakes out of the birdseed. Fruit them casing less. Probably be better with buffered peat on it though. You can also fruit the jars invitro.

peat is peat moss, its a fluffy plant material you can get at gardening stores, made of dead moss. its good for water retention. however, it is rather acidic in PH, and shrooms like to be slightly base, so you should 'buffer' the peat with something that will counteract the acidity. generally this is lime, oyster shell, or calcium powder.

how much is the vermiculite by you? i couldnt find it for quite a while, and ended up driving a half hour to a large greenhouse, where it was 4 dollars for 8 quarts (8.8 Liter).

peat with a source of calcium in it like crushes oystershells. I use garden calcium (powder) in my peat cause it works faster.

peat is rather acid,(Ph 5-6) mushrooms like it a little more base (Ph 7,5).

You want your first grow to have a really low probability of failure and frustration. That means the PF tek, and that means vermiculite. Pry that wallet open and get yourself a little bag of it. Make a few jars, see mushrooms, get happy. Your cakes will teach you more than postings can.

yeah but you should totally spaw to composted manure! It would be awsome if your first grow was a bulk tek!
