foil or tape

last time i steamed my jars i taped the holes prior to it, should i do this again or should i leave the holes uncovered and put foil over it and then put on the lids band? OR SHOULD I DO BOTH? thanks

you could do both if you want to be super safe. It's no big deal. All you are doing is keeping contams out of your jars so it's better safe than sorry. (= You don't need to put tape on the lid's band if that was a question. I'm not sure what you are asking for that one.

you put foil and/or tape there to keep contams out, and to make sure no water goes into the jars when sterilizing them. Doing both isn't really necessary; my friends always foils hers.
