I've been playing guitar for about 3 years now on and off, and have recently gotten into shredding alot...
i've been using some tutorials and lessons on shredding to get better at it, but im still lagging alot.
does anyone out there have any bands to recommend for good shredding besides the basics like bodom and arch enemy? I completely idolize yngwie malmsteen hes amazing.

hrmmm
jason becker (!!)
cacophony
megadeth's stuff with marty friedman on geetar
greg howe (omfg)
vinnie moore
joe satriani
steve vai
john petrucci
george bellas
paul gilbert
joe stump
chris broderick
buckethead
alexi laiho's other project with roope and kim goss has some pretty crazy guitar shit too, but I like CoB better
there's more but I'm drawing blank, I might add some later.
be sure to work on playing diminished and sweep arpeggios and harmonic minor in sixteenth note sextuplets
and learn some classical music (paganini, bach etc.), they all did, it's good for ya . I posted a tab and some good suggestions of classical songs for practicing that kind of thing in this thread a while back.

Well... put yourself back in 1979 when it was released. It instantly changed the music scene. Sure, it's overrated now. But back then it seemed like God himself took up the guitar.
Anyways, just making sure the guy hears the first shredding ever.

"Andres Segovia - #1 Shredder"
I have 2 of his records, the intimate guitar and best of classical spanish. hes the master of classical guitar.
joe satriani is a "guitarists guitarist", his music plays the roll of inspiring other guitarists.
vinnie moore, steve vai, stevie ray, all wonderful guitarists. also michaelangelo ( the guy with the crazy home-made double guitar who plays gnarly hammer-ons), greg lowe, and definate megadeths old shit is really good...
Im just looking for extremely talented guitarists who play really inspiring solo's.
I just recently picked up my guitar after 2 months from "hitting the wall", and im learning to play really fast. I'm really not open to any scales but the pentatonic, and g major right now, so mainly its a buncha fast blues solos. So if anyone has any links to any pages teaching good scale lessons and shredding lessons that would be great... ive already done one nice lesson thats gotten me far, if anyone is interest heres the link...
http://www.guitarnotes.com/guitar/notes2/speed1.shtml The need for speed, good lesson.

The Dream Theater guy is fine for that type of thing, but they got pretty bad after Change Of Seasons.
Yes guitarist Steve Howe is a much better combination of virtuoso and soul to me. Siberian Khatru may be his most badass riff, Close To The Edge or Yessongs version.

I really, really don't like shred, but I guess those who do idolize John Petrucci, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Randy Rhoads.

I've spent a lot of time listening to a lot of guitar players and these 2 are hands down the best in my opinion.

"I really, really don't like shred,"
Every shredder you say that to is gonna have the same response... DONT WANNA HEAR IT...
People listen to good charlotte too but i dont invade their threads and be like "they suck"
at least you were nicer than some =P but i still hear something or someone against shred just about every day.
Shredding to me is not going to be my style of music, but I would definately like to expand my knowledge of guitar to the more technical realms.
I'm a metal guitarist with punk influences, and im currently studying 77 and 86 styles (the 4 chord shit you hear today is NOT punk), and I am horrible at solo's right now so im trying to expand my knowledge so I can make things more interesting on stage. Alot of people think punk is crap, but then again alot of people think good charlotte or blink 182 is punk.
Thanks for the links faslimy, and to everyone else thanks for your knowledge of good musicians.
If anyone still had anything that hasn't been added ide be glad to look them up. Or if anyone has any lessons ide be glad to check them out...
